Mangaluru, Nov 15: Even though an inter-religious couple was allegedly attacked by the relatives of the girl soon after their wedding in the city on Friday, the religious and social organizations of Muslims in the city have distanced themselves from the issue.
On Friday Madhush (21), a Hindu youth from Vamanjoor on the outskirts of the city, and his neighbor, a Muslim girl got their marriage registered at the sub-registrar's office and then visited a Korga temple near Sultan Battery.
It is learnt that the parents of Madhush, a painter by profession, had given green signal for the marriage while the bride (19) who changed her name from Zubeida to Mahalaxmi, faced severe opposition for her parents.
When the couple was offering pooja at the Koraga temple the girl's family members including her father Shahul Hameed, uncle Yusuf rushed to the spot and allegedly attempted to assault the couple. Following this incident the newly wedded couple filed a complaint against girl's family at jurisdictional Barke police station.
However, the incident took a communal turn when activists of Sangh Parivar entered the scene. It is learnt that the bridegroom was advised by some group to file an atrocity complaint against the girl's family members.
Meanwhile, Muslim organizations and religious leaders have urged the people not to communalize the issue as the couple has decided to lead a marital life.
“We urge people not to politicize or communalize this trivial issue. A boy and a girl belonging to two poor families have entered marital life. Communal outfits are trying to seize this opportunity to spread hatred. Muslims should show their maturity in this case and distance themselves from the issue,” said a Muslim cleric from Mangaluru.
An activist of Popular Front of India (PFI) said on condition of anonymity that his group will not interfere in this issue unlike Hindutva outfits. “It's none of our business. We should concentrate on our community and give good education to its members. We don't believe in moral policing,” he said.
Expressing similar views an activist of Youth Wing Jamaath-e-Islami Hind said that Muslims should not bother much about trivial issues. “If Muslim individuals get a good education they will neither take any wrong decision nor commit any crime,” he said adding that we can provide good education and create awareness among community members but cannot forcefully prevent them for doing anything against their own interest.
