Mangalore, Nov 20: The 523rd birth anniversary of saint poet Kanakadasa was celebrated in Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday.
Minister for Fisheries and Youth Affairs Abhayachandra Jain inaugurated the programme organised by DK district administration, Department of Kannada and Culture, and Karavali Kurubara Sangha, Mangalore at Town Hall here on the occasion of Kanaka Jayanthi.
In his inaugural address, Mr Jain said that Kanakadasa was a renowned saint who fought against superstition and casteism and preached not to differentiate between the rich and the poor. He was a social reformer who contributed greatly to the unprivileged, and his principles and ideals should be inculcated in the new generations, he said.
DK Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Tulasi Maddiddeni released a portrait of the saint in the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Mangalore North MLA B A Moideen Bava opined that if people would inculcate the ideals of Kanakadasa in our lives, all discrimination based on caste and creed would disappear. Celebrating his birth anniversary will be meaningful, when we tread on the path shown of righteousness shown by the saint, he said.
Chaitnalli Mahesh gave a lecture on the life and teachings of saint Kanakadasa in the programme.
Additional deputy commissioner Dayanand made the introductory remarks, while registrar of Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum Dr K E Prakash welcomed the gathering.
Prior to the formal programme, a colourful procession was undertaken from Sharavu Ganapathi temple which was inaugurated by Mr Bava. The procession culminated at Town Hall, Mangalore.
