Bengaluru, Jun 20: Making its intentions of wooing dalit voters in the 2018 assembly elections clear, BJP has chosen party state president and chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa as one of the proposers for NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind.
Yeddyurappa has been summoned by the national leadership to sign the nomination papers of Kovind in New Delhi. In a statement, he welcomed Kovind's nomination and lauded the BJP presidential nominee for his contribution to the welfare of dalits and backward classes in the country.
As per the nomination rules, 50 proposers from among MPs need to sign for the candidate. Another 50 MPs have to second the proposal. According to party sources, Yeddyurappa will go to New Delhi to sign on Kovind's nomination papers and return to the state late on Tuesday evening.
On a tour of drought-hit areas and visiting dalit homes, Yeddyurappa is said to be taking a break for this specific purpose and another party event for two days. He is scheduled to continue his last leg of the tour to Kolar and Ramanagara later in the week.
