Christian reformists raise voice against 'Manu-vad' in Churches

November 16, 2011

Mangalore, November 16: Chief Trustee of the Christian Reforms Foundation P B D'Sa announced in a press conference the celebration of Reformation Sunday on December 11, 2011.

Treating it like a follow up measure, he said, the Foundation will hold a simple awareness group meeting in front of the churches like Milagres, Kulshekar, Puttur, Sastan, Udupi and Kudapur.

Mr D'Sa highlighted the importance of this day by giving background and motive behind the Reformation Sunday. “World over, all organised religions, though started by their founders with noble ethical motives, slowly become corrupt and the priestly class have become the owners of huge assets in movable and immovable properties,” he said.

“Priests are living like princes and criminals. Various laymen's organisations have been trying to expose the corruption, misuse of power and properties by these priests. They live by double standards”, he alleged.

He also recalled the claim that Christian Church is the biggest single land lord in India and though all their assets are built out of contributions and donations, the entire ownership lies with the Diocesan Bishop. This is the best kept secret and biggest fraud and breach of trust committed by religious men on laymen, he said.

The educated class among Christian has questioned the Church constitution and canon law, and demanded democratisation of Christian Church on regular basis, but clergy does not want to surrender power nor share it with Laity, he explained.

He said that United Christian Association had moved to court for quashing the validity of the constitution of Mangalore Diocese and the case is still pending. Associations in Mumbai, Bangalore and Goa have started a network on an All India basis to create awareness amongst laymen about the happenings in the church administration. Thus an All India Association of concerned catholic Christians has been formed in Mumbai, he said.

He said, the Mangalore Christian Reforms Foundation, after a day's deliberation has passed ten resolutions in this regard. Even though the resolutions were sent to the Bishop of Mangalore and Pope it has not sought their attention. Some of the clergy are also threatening and blackmailing the people saying that they will not baptize children and not bury the dead. In the bargain, laymen gave up this reformation agenda and have compromised with the clergy and surrendered to their whims and fancies. These groups will continue to meet before other Diocesan Churches depending on the availability of time and it would be a regular feature till the clergy see reason and co-operate with the Laity. Failing to reform would mean bringing all Churches under government control, he said.

Explaining the reasons behind this reformation Mr D'Sa said, the Christian cemeteries which were allotted to Christians to bury the dead are being sold or leased out by the priests. Mangalore has thousands of Mulgeni tenants. The Bishop has deprived them of Varga rights and also has opposed the government's bill on Mulgeni. The halls, Churches, schools and hospitals are meant to be used by the laymen but if a Christian Layman's organisation needs to use them they are not given, while the priests conduct events free of cost, he said.

Mr D'Sa said that there is also no transparency about how much money is collected by way of rents, fees and annual membership. This amounts to around 48 crores. There have been demands made to the clergy to convert schools, colleges, halls, hospitals and farms as co-operative societies to regulate the income but the clergy is not willing. Instead they are amounting to breach of trust, cheating and misappropriation, he said.

'Manu-vad'

He also said that 'Manuvad' is rampant in the Churches as most of Bishops, priests and nuns are white skinned so called Brahmins. Admissions to Dalit are denied in schools and colleges even after spending so much money on conversions. Once the job of conversion is done Dalit Christians are not entertained in schools and colleges, he said. Since conversions are a constitutional right, talking against it is anti – national, he added.

Trouble is given to laymen who silently pray in their houses, he said.

He also said that a fraud of Rs 8 crores is suspected in the name of celebrations.

Members of Christian Reform Foundation Walter Mascarenhas, Roshan Lobo and Augustin were present at the press meet.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Sunday said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing into sexual abuse charges against Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, will not be going abroad to bring him back, and the Interpol will share information about him.

He also cautioned political leaders about making public statements or sharing information in connection with the case, which is sensitive.

The 33-year-old Prajwal Revanna, who is grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, is facing charges of sexually abusing several women.

The scandal has raised a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

Prajwal Revanna is said to have flown abroad on April 27, a day after the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka was held.

He was BJP-JD(S) alliance's joint candidate from Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls in the first phase.

"No, there is no such option. Blue Corner Notice has been issued and the Interpol will share the information. The respective country in which he is found or identified - they will inform them (Interpol) and then our agencies, the CBI will get to know, and through them we will get to know."

"So far there is no information," Parameshwara said.

He was responding to a question on reports about the SIT team travelling abroad in connection with the case.

Speaking to reporters, he said, "Investigation is going on, not to affect the investigation we don't want to share any information."

Responding to a question on Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's statement alleging conspiracy behind the arrest of BJP leader Devaraje Gowda, for making allegations against Congress leaders in connection with the case, Parameshwara said, "If anyone says anything I cannot react to it. We cannot respond to every public statement. As this is a serious case, we cannot share information until the investigation is completed."

"My request to the public and to our leaders is to be cautious while making statements. If not, based on the statements given by them, we may have to call them for investigation and record their statement under 41 A of CrPC," he added.

Asked whether JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy will also be served notice, the Minister said he is a former CM and that he believes that the former has taken this case seriously.

"Before giving any statements on this case or before sharing any information in the public domain, one has to be cautious, and this applies to all," he added.

Israeli military aircraft have heavily bombed the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip accompanied with ground advances shortly after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas said it had agreed to a proposal on ceasefire in Gaza.

A Palestinian journalist reported flares in the night sky, while locals said dozens of reconnaissance drones flew overhead.

The official Palestinian news agency Wafa and Egyptian media said Israeli military vehicles advanced towards the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing with Egypt, as well as the Karem Shalom crossing with the Israeli-occupied territories.

A Palestinian security official and an Egyptian authority have told the Associated Press news agency that Israeli tanks have entered Rafah, reaching as close as 200 meters from Rafah’s border crossing with neighboring Egypt.

The Israeli military has said it was conducting “targeted strikes” against Hamas in eastern Rafah.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has also said "Israel is continuing the operation in Rafah to exert military pressure on Hamas" in order to advance the release of captives and what it called "the other objectives of the war."

In the meantime, it described the proposal on ceasefire as "far from Israel's essential demands," but added that it would send negotiators for talks "to exhaust the potential for arriving at an agreement."

The military strikes on Rafah came ahead of talks in Egypt on Tuesday aimed at sealing a truce proposal accepted by Hamas, which was put forward by Qatari and Egyptian mediators.

According to a copy of the proposal, there will be three phases to ending Israel’s onslaught against Gaza.

The first phase calls for a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Netzarim corridor and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes. The second phase involves an announcement of a permanent cessation of military operations. In the last phase, there would be a complete end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

In return, Israel would be required to release an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners, withdraw its troops from certain regions of the Gaza Strip, and allow Palestinians to travel from the south of the coastal sliver to the north.

About 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering in Rafah, once designated a “safe zone” by the Israeli military. Palestinians are now struggling to evacuate the city, after the Israeli military dropped leaflets ordering them to leave as a large-scale assault on the city is planned.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that a ground invasion of Rafah would be “intolerable” and called on Israel and Hamas “to go an extra mile” to reach a truce deal.

“This is an opportunity that cannot be missed, and a ground invasion in Rafah would be intolerable because of its devastating humanitarian consequences, and because of its destabilizing impact in the region,” Guterres told reporters on Monday ahead of a meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella in New York.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has also warned that Israel is “jeopardizing the deal by bombing Rafah.”

devaraje gowda.jpg

In a fresh claim, arrested BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda has alleged that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and four other ministers were behind exposing Prajwal Revanna’s sex scam that has brought disgrace to Janata Dal (Secular) H D Deve Gowda family.

Devaraje Gowda has been arrested in a sexual abuse case.

Speaking to reporters while being taken to the district prisons, in Hassan on Friday, Gowda alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore to drag the name of H D Kumaraswamy in the Prajwal’s case.

“D K Shivakumar had offered me Rs 100 crore to project that H D Kumaraswamy was behind the case. The offer was made through ministers N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister. They had even sent Rs 5 crore as advance to Bowring Club. But I did not agree. Hence, they hatched a plot to trap me,” Gowda alleged.

“It is D K Shivakumar, who collected all information from Prajwal Revanna’s former car driver Karthik and readied the pen drive. A team of four ministers were formed to handle the issue. As I did not agree to the plan. They planned to bring disrepute to the BJP, Narendra Modi and H D Kumaraswamy,” he said.

Gowda further alleged that former MLC M A Gopalaswamy of Channarayapatna was sent to him for negotiation.

“The main intention of D K Shivakumar is to bring disrepute to Modi and BJP in the case. Besides, he wanted to defame H D Kumaraswamy’s leadership in the state” he claimed. “They filed a sexual harassment and rape case against me, but found no evidence. Now, they are trying to fix me in the pen drive case” he alleged.
