Mangalore, Aug 2: As a result of incessant rains lashing most parts of Dakshina Kannada on Thursday and Friday, life was thrown out of gear with water levels in Nethravati river rising considerably and several houses in parts of the district flooding with water.
People in several areas in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi were stranded in their houses after rain inundated the areas.
On Thursday, each taluk in the district had received rainfall over 100mm in 24 hours. As per the meteorological department, Moodbidri received the highest rainfall of 172mm in the district.
Mangalore taluk received 120mm rainfall on Thursday, Bantwal taluk received 118mm, Puttur taluk received 135mm, Sullia taluk received around 112mm, Belthangady taluk over 148mm and Uppinangady 138mm.
There were instances of water logging in low-lying areas and roads in Bantwal taluk, as well as Puttur taluk. Few bridges on major routes in the district have been submerged cutting off access to places like Subrahmanya from Bangalore, Dharmasthala and Mangalore from Uppinangady.
In Udupi district, Udupi taluk received 145mm rainfall, while Karkala received 172mm and Kundapur received the highest rainfall of 180mm.
With the weather forecast predicting heavy downpour in the next 24 hours, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim has declared a holiday for schools in the district on Saturday, while Udupi deputy commissioner Muddu Mohan has declared holiday to all schools and colleges.
There were also reports of houses being damaged partially in Udupi district to the heavy rains accompanied by strong winds.
Fishermen have also been warned from venturing into the sea due to possibility of strong winds.
