Bangalore, Sep 1: Vajubhai Vala, former Gujarat Assembly Speaker and an old trusted aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was today sworn in as Governor of Karnataka.

76-year-old Vala was administered oath of office by Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court D H Waghela at a ceremony at Raj Bhavan.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Union Ministers D V Sadananda Gowda and Ananth Kumar, state ministers, leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Jagadish Shettar, BJP Vice-President B S Yeddyurappa and senior bureaucrats were present at the event.

Vala took the oath in Hindi.

With a strong RSS background, Vala had served in the Modi Government in Gujarat as Finance Minister before he was elected as Speaker in January last year. He has an impressive record of having presented the state budget 18 times.

Vala succeeds Rosaiah, Tamil Nadu Governor who was given additional charge of Karnataka, post the retirement of H R Bharadwaj on June 28.

A B.Sc., LL.B graduate, Vala entered public life as a Swayamsevak of RSS during his school days. He became Mayor of Rajkot city in February 1983 and was elected as an MLA for the first time in 1985 from Rajkot-2 constituency.

On the eve of the swearing-in, Siddaramaiah had yesterday expressed unhappiness over the Modi Government not consulting him about his appointment to the state."... it is customary that the Chief Minister is consulted before appointing the new Governor; they have done this (appointment) without consulting me," he had said.

Siddaramaiah, however, said now that Vala had been appointed, he would welcome him.

Taking up the gubernatorial responsibility in an opposition (Congress) ruled state, Vala has said in interviews that he would work under the provisions of the Constitution and would be on the right side of the law.

The previous BJP Government when headed by B S Yeddyurappa had strained relations with Bhardwaj who was then seen as being at loggerheads with the opposition-ruled state. His relationship with the D V Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar governments was, however, normal.

In a fresh claim, arrested BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda has alleged that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and four other ministers were behind exposing Prajwal Revanna’s sex scam that has brought disgrace to Janata Dal (Secular) H D Deve Gowda family.

Devaraje Gowda has been arrested in a sexual abuse case.

Speaking to reporters while being taken to the district prisons, in Hassan on Friday, Gowda alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore to drag the name of H D Kumaraswamy in the Prajwal’s case.

“D K Shivakumar had offered me Rs 100 crore to project that H D Kumaraswamy was behind the case. The offer was made through ministers N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister. They had even sent Rs 5 crore as advance to Bowring Club. But I did not agree. Hence, they hatched a plot to trap me,” Gowda alleged.

“It is D K Shivakumar, who collected all information from Prajwal Revanna’s former car driver Karthik and readied the pen drive. A team of four ministers were formed to handle the issue. As I did not agree to the plan. They planned to bring disrepute to the BJP, Narendra Modi and H D Kumaraswamy,” he said.

Gowda further alleged that former MLC M A Gopalaswamy of Channarayapatna was sent to him for negotiation.

“The main intention of D K Shivakumar is to bring disrepute to Modi and BJP in the case. Besides, he wanted to defame H D Kumaraswamy’s leadership in the state” he claimed. “They filed a sexual harassment and rape case against me, but found no evidence. Now, they are trying to fix me in the pen drive case” he alleged.

Mangaluru, May 6: A five-year-old girl from Arendur village of Siddapura taluk of Uttara Kannada district died of Kyasanur Forest Disease (monkey fever) recently.

As her health deteriorated, she was admitted to the KMC Hospital in Mangaluru, where she failed to respond to the treatment and died on Friday night.

It is learned that the KFD is slowly spreading to the newer areas of coastal and malnad areas of Karnataka

According to officials, KFD spreads due to bites of ticks that generally survive on monkeys. This tick bites humans which causes the infection. Humans also contract the disease by coming in contact with cattle bitten by ticks.

Mangaluru: Disgruntled BJP leader and former MLA K Raghupathi Bhat, who is contesting the legislative council election as an independent candidate from the South West Graduates constituency, said the BJP has adopted the “godfather culture” of the Congress.

Bhat told reporters here on Saturday, that he has not tried to appease any senior BJP leaders to get a party ticket to contest the MLC poll.

“I am contesting and seeking votes based on my achievements. My contesting may have a negative impact on the BJP. However, I want to go back to the BJP after winning this election,” Bhat said, and refused to answer the actual reason for the denial of a BJP ticket to him.

“I have no idea who played from behind that I was denied a ticket for the MLC poll.

Earlier, the BJP had a culture of selecting candidates for MLA and MLC polls by seeking the opinion of party workers at the booth level, followed by discussions at mandal and district levels.

Now the situation is such that even if one person’s name was sent from the state, the final list will be different. The godfather culture of the Congress has stretched into our party too. Only those who appease leaders get a ticket in the BJP. However, I have not appeased any leader. I believe in the support of party workers, and with this confidence I am contesting the election,” Bhat said.

To a query, Bhat said that he has not contacted by BJP leaders after deciding to contest the MLC poll.

“I have already requested all leaders that I should get the party’s Form B to contest the MLC poll from the South West Graduates constituency. I have told them that I am also contesting as an independent candidate on behalf of the BJP. The ultimate aim of my contesting the election is that senior leaders should know the injustice that honest party workers are facing in the BJP,” he said.
