Mangalore, Sep 2: The final rites of Shyamprasad Shastry, who ended his life allegedly by shooting himself in the chest after repotedly receiving threat calls from Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati who was accused of sexual harassment, were performed with religious rituals on Monday.
The circumstances leading to his alleged suicide remain a mystery as rumours such as threat calls and breaking of family ties are doing the rounds following his death. Adding fuel to this claim, locals picketed the Puttur town police station late night on Sunday, demanding that the police should probe the source of anonymous threat calls received by Shyamprasad and take appropriate legal action against the offenders.
It is said that while Shyamprasad was having his lunch, he received a phone call following which he reportedly threw his cellphone on the floor and shot himself in the chest. This gives rise to more pressure demanding to know the caller of the particular phone call.
Even as a suicide note was found along with Shyamprasad's body, the police have not revealed the content of the note from the investigation point of view.
It has also been said Shyamprasad had resorted to end his life over derogatory remarks made by Havyaka Brahmins in connection with the sexual harassment charges filed by his brother's daughter against the swamiji of Ramachandrapura Mutt.
Shyamprasad, who breathed his last on Sunday evening, had been receiving threat calls pressurising him not to interfere in the sexual harassment case filed against Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati of Ramachandrapura Mutt and his disciples.
According to the locals, there was slight discrimination while performing the final rites of Shyamprasad as per the burial customs of Havyaka Brahmins.
Meanwhile, Shyamprasad's wife Sandhyalaxmi has stated in her complaint at Puttur town police station, that her husband resorted to committing suicide because of numerous threat calls made to him by disciples of the swamiji of Ramachandrapura Mutt.
She stated that her husband was mentally disturbed by the threat calls from the Mutt.
The investigating police have said that the contents of the death note left by Shyamprasad and his diary would also be probed during the course of investigation. The source of the threat calls would also be probed, said the police.
