Mangalore, Sep 15: Peace activists and family members of a Dubai-bound Muslim passenger, who had been briefly detained at Mangalore International Airport last weekend, have demanded unconditional apology from a section of media that terrorized the port city through their racist reportage.

Within a few hours after Abdul Khader, a resident of Muttagate in Uppala town of Kasargod district, was taken into custody at the airport for carrying a suspicious parcel' the print and electronic media in the region portrayed him as a notorious terrorist, who had links with terrorist outfits in middle east.

The irresponsible allegations against an innocent passenger have instigated a group of activists to launch a campaign against the liar media. Social media was flooded with angry remarks against the local media of Mangalore for publishing fabricated stories. Memes creating awareness against false propaganda by media also began to spread on WhatsApp and twitter. Vartha Bharathi, a Mangalore based Kannada daily went on to expose the lies spread by a few newspapers.

Apologize for your blunder!

“Abdul Khader is a not only a reputed man in his village but also a known personality among expatriate workers in Dubai, as he has been a manager of an institution for the last nine years there. He is known for his kindness among his friends and relatives. How can media accuse him of having links with terrorists in Syria?” asked Jalal, one of his friends.

“All the news papers, news channels and news portals which published exaggerated lies must unconditionally apologize if they want to restore their credibility,” he demanded.

M K Mohammed Haji, the father of Abdul Khader, says that he cannot tolerate such a heinous allegation against his son, who is respected by all.  “When I came to know that my son was taken into custody at the airport for unknown reasons, I was shocked. I was confident that my son did not commit any crime. I really can't understand why media treated him like a terrorist. They must apologize,” he said.

An activist writes to the editor of a Mangalore based news portal demanding apology: “It is very unfortunate that, your news portal had published the news irresponsibly alleging the victim had connection with Syrian terrorist group referring some sources which was totally baseless allegation. We don't understand the haste of publishing such a heinous charge on an innocent person without checking the authenticity of the sources. Even Police department never mentioned such claims until their investigations are over and finally the victim proved to be innocent. We strongly condemn such an irresponsible act and demand apology for publishing such a wrong and baseless report,” he said.

Hair-raising terror stories!

Mangaloreans on Sunday woke up to a shocking news about the arrest of a “terrorist” who had links with Syrian terrorist outfits”. The seizure of “explosives” from his possession, which could be used to “trigger explosion in the aircraft” was the breaking news on several Kannada TV channels in the early hours of Sunday.

Such creative stories were not confined to TV channels, but local newspapers and news portals too contributed to disturb peace in the society. “There were reports that ammonium nitrate, battery and wires were found in his possession…As per sources, the accused is suspected to have links with a terrorist group of Syria…The accused himself had carved a hole on the inside of the tab to hide the liquid, sources said… Sources said that the security personnel had prior information about a possible blast at the airport and hence have beefed up the security…” these are mere excerpts from a horrible report posted on news portal. Prominent Kannada dailies of the region also had unleashed similar lies.

The reality

Abdul Khader, who spent a month long vacation with his family members, was supposed to board a Dubai-bound flight Saturday night. At the check-in, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel found a tablet PC and a small bottle of liquid inside a book in his baggage. When they took the tab out, its battery cover came out exposing the damaged part.

In fact the tab meant for repair and a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide to be used as sanitizer were inside a parcel handed over to Abdul Khader by one of his neighbours. “A woman from his neighbour had asked Abdul Khader to handover the parcel to her brother in Dubai. Unfortunately, he did not know that the parcel contained such things,” said a family member of the victim.

However, the name of the victim might have prompted the authorities to immediately handover him to police for further interrogation. The police subjected the detained passenger, his family members and neighbours for several hours of rigorous interrogation before announcing that he was innocent. The cops also sought help of the bomb detection and diffusion squad and the Forensic Science Laboratory officials to examine the confiscated parcel containing tab and liquid. The bomb diffusion squad came down from Bangalore on Sunday afternoon. At about 2 p.m., the team concluded that there were no explosive substances.

Bengaluru: All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba on Monday accused the BJP and JD(S) of being silent over the alleged sex scandal involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna and said the horrifying case of violence against women has shocked the nation.

"More than 3000 videos with hundreds of women being sexually harassed, violated and even brutalised by MP Prajwal Revanna over the past few years have shaken the conscience of Kannadigas and Indians alike," she told at a press conference here.

Prajwal (33) is grandson of JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. JD(S) joined the NDA in September last year. He was the NDA candidate in Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, which went for polls on April 26.

According to police sources, he left the country after voting was over.

The Congress government in Karnataka on Sunday constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the alleged sex scandal.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days.

Lamba said the horrifying case of sexual violence against hundreds of women has shocked the nation.

"These acts of sexual brutality against hapless women has revealed the depravity of MP Prajwal Revanna, but the silence and sheer apathy of the BJP and JDS in this horrendous case is absolutely shameful," she said.

She alleged that in these videos, some recorded against the consent of the victim, women are seen pleading to be spared but the MP continues to brutalise and sexually violate them. Party 'karyakartas', panchayat members, elderly women, women who came asking for help to him and even maids have not been spared.

"The horrible fact is, that the acts of this sexual predator MP Prajwal Revanna was endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he campaigned in Old Mysuru Region on April 14th, 2024," she alleged.

"....the BJP JDS are still silent which shows you their true Anti Woman DNA!! Will the BJP or JDS answer?".

Bengaluru: BJP leader Anantkumar Hegde represented Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha segment in Karnataka for six terms and now gynecologist Anjali Nimbalkar is putting up a spirited fight seeking to turn the tide and "deliver" it for the Congress.

Dr Nimbalkar is taking on former Karnataka Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, who replaced Hegde, in this BJP stronghold.

A former Congress MLA, she lost the Assembly elections from Khanapur in Belagavi district last year.

The 62-year-old Kageri, a six-term MLA and a former minister, was also defeated in the Assembly polls from Sirsi.

"In the past 30 years, the voice of Uttara Kannada was not spoken and not even a single question was asked in the Parliament," Nimbalkar said in an apparent dig at Hegde.

If elected, she said her focus is to address the local issues related to forest dwellers, getting them 'patra' for their own land -- a battle they have been fighting for long.

Also on her priority list is getting a multispecialty hospital in Kumta as per people's demand, generating employment and focusing on tourism for the overall development of Uttara Kannada.

"Issues related to forest dwellers -- they want a 'patra' for their own land -- we will try and put forth these issues in the first session itself and we will see to it that maximum applications which are pending with the Central government get cleared during the first session itself," she said in an interview.

"So, our thing is that at least 50 per cent of the jobs should be given to the local Kannadigas in the Central schemes which are implemented in the district," she said.

Noting that Uttara Kannada has a combination of both beaches and temples, Nimbalkar said the district can be developed internationally in a much higher scale than "what actually Goa or Kerala is".

The Congress candidate is also banking on the five guarantee schemes launched by the Siddaramaiah-led government in Karnataka and the promises made by party in its manifesto at the national level.

Responding to a question, she expressed happiness that the Congress has fielded a total of six women candidates out of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka.

While campaigning, Nimbalkar said she was overwhelmed to see a large number of people, especially women, turning up for her rallies despite the intense heat in Uttara Kannada.

"They are very happy that the Congress has given a woman candidate and an educated candidate who herself is a doctor and a gynecologist. So they are excited that, yes, she can be our voice in the Parliament who can fight for our rights," the 47-year-old said.

"I have worked as an MLA (Khanapur), so they have seen my work in the Assembly and the expectations are like, yes, she will be the one who will be speaking for us and that faith is seen in their eyes," she said.

Nimbalkar strongly believes that when women enter any field, it brings a different perspective - be it in terms of management, policy formulation or even as homemakers.

Uttara Kannada is among the 14 constituencies going for polls in Karnataka under second phase on May 7.

Karnataka has 28 Lok Sabha seats and the first phase of polling was held on April 26.

Mysuru, Apr 29: Veteran politician and incumbent Chamarajanagar MP V Srinivas Prasad breathed his last at 76.The stalwart BJP leader, who had been battling health issues, succumbed to a severe heart attack, leaving behind a void in Karnataka's political arena.

A Dalit leader in the Old Mysuru region, Prasad was in Congress but joined the Bharatiya Janata Party before the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections following a fallout with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The two had recently met in Mysuru and discussed the political scenario in the state.

Prasad extended support to the Congress in the Lok Sabha election 2024 and this is being seen as a crucial factor in the SC-reserved Chamarajanagar constituency, which Prasad represented in Parliament. On April 2, Prasad’s relatives and supporters joined Congress.

He served as a Union minister from 1999 to 2004 as the Loka Jana Shakthi MP. In the Karnataka Assembly elections, he was elected twice as an MLA and served as the state’s revenue minister.

Prasad, known for his distinguished political career spanning over five decades, was admitted to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru due to urinary tract-related complications and age-related ailments.

However, his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his untimely demise in the wee hours of Monday.

Born on August 6, 1947, in Ashokapuram, Mysuru, Prasad's political journey was marked by significant milestones. He represented Chamarajanagar constituency as MP for an unprecedented seven terms and had derved as MLA from Nanjangud constituency twice.

He had held key ministerial portfolios including Minister for Food and Civil Supplies in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and Minister for Revenue and Muzrai in the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government.

He had joined the BJP officially in December 2016 and was elected as MP from Chamarajanagar again in 2019, showcasing his enduring popularity among constituents.

Prasad's demise has plunged the political fraternity and his supporters into mourning. His family members, political associates, and well-wishers are gathering to pay their final respects as his mortal remains are being transported from Manipal Hospital to his residence in Jayalakshmipuram, Mysuru.

The Exhibition Grounds in Mysuru will witness a stream of mourners as Prasad's mortal remains will be kept for public viewing, allowing people from all walks of life to bid farewell to their beloved leader.

Prasad's name had come up in the 'Tehelka tapes' controversy, after the sting operation by magazine Tehelka to expose defence deals under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government. The tapes showed Samata Party leader Jaya Jaitley allegedly telling an arms dealer to deposit money with Prasad, who was then in Bengaluru. However, Prasad denied these claims, saying he was in Mysuru at the time, and also sued Tehelka for defamation.
