Bantwal, Oct 3: A group of assailants waylaid a vehicle transporting cattle and brutally assaulted two occupants of the vehicle at Porlipadi near Kalladka in Bantwal taluk early morning on Thursday.

The two were brutally assaulted with lethal weapons such as swords and iron rods by over 20 assailants, allegedly owing allegiance to the Sangh Parivar.

Both the victims, Siddiq (32) and Basheer (22) were gravely injured by the assailants and are in an extremely critical state in the intensive care unit of a private hospital. Siddiq was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state.

It is learnt that the assailants planned to ram the cattle-laden vehicle with a pick-up truck at Porlipadi to bring them to a stop. In his haste to avoid being rammed by the pickup, the oncoming vehicle fell into a roadside ditch.

After the accident, around 20 assailants dragged the two out of the vehicle and assaulted them with swords and rods brutally. Siddiq sustained severe injuries to his arms, legs, neck and back, while Basheer was gravely injured on his arm, head and legs.

It is said that two youth had been following the cattle-laden vehicle in the wee hours of Thursday from Mani. Later, a pickup truck with five persons had been lying in wait for the vehicle at Porlipadi.

When the vehicle lost control to avoid an accident with the parked pickup truck, it fell into a ditch and the assailants began assaulting the two persons inside. The driver of the vehicle is said to have escaped from the scene.

The vehicle transporting the cattle, the pickup truck used to stop the vehicle, the bike following the vehicle and the two cattle inside the vehicle have been seized by the police.

Some of the assailants have been identified as Kalladka residents Mithun, Dheeraj, Kamalaksha, Yathiraj, Chetan, Bhavith and Raviraj, and the police have arrested one person among them.

A case of illegal cattle trafficking has been registered against Siddiq and Basheer. Security arrangements have been made for them in the hospital they are being treated.

A tense situation had prevailed in Kalladka following the spread of rumours with regard to group clashes. The police arrived shortly and the situation was brought under control as per the directions of superintendent of police S D Sharanappa.

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has taken a step towards enhancing aircraft safety and has planned to install a Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday. The project involves various works related to the PAL system and aims to be completed in 20 months.

The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the ministry of civil aviation and the civil aviation safety and security regulator. The PAL CAT 1 system will provide pilots with improved visibility of runway 24 and guidance during their final landing approach. The system will be installed 900m from the threshold of runway 24, as this end of the runway accounts for 90% of aircraft landings at the airport.

The PAL will be mounted on approximately 18 lattice structures, which is a unique feature of the project. The lights will be fixed to frangible T-shaped structures. The project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, which has already been completed and is awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: Former union minister C M Ibrahim, who was expelled from Janata Dal (Secular) for protesting against party’s alliance with BJP, has stressed on need for a third front not just at the national level, but also in Karnataka.

Addressing a news conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday, he said he’s planning to form a third front in Karnataka along with Lingayat Seer Dingaleshwar Swami.

Ibrahim said that he will tour the state between April 27 and May 4 and that he would meet Dingaleshwar Swami on April 29. “There is a need for the third front in this country. We will try to establish a third front in association with the seer and we hope we will be successful in those efforts,” he said.

Expressing disappointment with the Congress for not doing enough to gain the full confidence of Muslims, Ibrahim said that Congress is concentrating only on certain communities for votes, and ignoring Muslims.

“The Congress is not even caring for Muslims and Dalit votes. In some Muslim areas they did not even hold campaigns seeking votes and trying to convince the communities which never vote in their favour. I fear this may lead to low turnout and Congress may lose its vote base,” he opined.

Mentioning about guarantees on which Congress is strongly relying during this election, Ibrahim said, such things won’t work all the time. “Guarantees will not work anymore. Every election you need to give something new to the voters,” he added.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that Congress is trying to appease minorities for votes, Ibrahim requested both Congress and BJP parties not bring Muslims between them. “I request both parties. Leave us alone. Don’t make us sandwiches for your political sake. We are living with peace and hope even the Prime Minister will understand this,” Ibrahim added.

Launching a broadside against Prime Minister Deve Gowda, Ibrahim said, “Deve Gowda has sold his personality itself. Whatever I have told about JD(S) has come true. I pity, a former Prime Minister should not have come to this stage,” he said.
