Cattle transporters brutally attacked with lethal weapons near Kalladka

Bantwal, Oct 3: A group of assailants waylaid a vehicle transporting cattle and brutally assaulted two occupants of the vehicle at Porlipadi near Kalladka in Bantwal taluk early morning on Thursday.

The two were brutally assaulted with lethal weapons such as swords and iron rods by over 20 assailants, allegedly owing allegiance to the Sangh Parivar.

Both the victims, Siddiq (32) and Basheer (22) were gravely injured by the assailants and are in an extremely critical state in the intensive care unit of a private hospital. Siddiq was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state.

It is learnt that the assailants planned to ram the cattle-laden vehicle with a pick-up truck at Porlipadi to bring them to a stop. In his haste to avoid being rammed by the pickup, the oncoming vehicle fell into a roadside ditch.

After the accident, around 20 assailants dragged the two out of the vehicle and assaulted them with swords and rods brutally. Siddiq sustained severe injuries to his arms, legs, neck and back, while Basheer was gravely injured on his arm, head and legs.

It is said that two youth had been following the cattle-laden vehicle in the wee hours of Thursday from Mani. Later, a pickup truck with five persons had been lying in wait for the vehicle at Porlipadi.

When the vehicle lost control to avoid an accident with the parked pickup truck, it fell into a ditch and the assailants began assaulting the two persons inside. The driver of the vehicle is said to have escaped from the scene.

The vehicle transporting the cattle, the pickup truck used to stop the vehicle, the bike following the vehicle and the two cattle inside the vehicle have been seized by the police.

Some of the assailants have been identified as Kalladka residents Mithun, Dheeraj, Kamalaksha, Yathiraj, Chetan, Bhavith and Raviraj, and the police have arrested one person among them.

A case of illegal cattle trafficking has been registered against Siddiq and Basheer. Security arrangements have been made for them in the hospital they are being treated.

A tense situation had prevailed in Kalladka following the spread of rumours with regard to group clashes. The police arrived shortly and the situation was brought under control as per the directions of superintendent of police S D Sharanappa.

Madikeri: A 15-year-old was bludgeoned to death and the accused fled with her severed head at Mutlu village in Somwarpet of Kodagu district on Thursday late night, hours after her SSLC examination result was declared.  

The victim has been identified as US Meena, a 10th grade student of Surlabbi High School. She had passed the SSLC examination and her school attained 100% results. 

However, she was brutally murdered by accused Prakash (32), a resident of the village. The police have launched a search operation to find the suspect, said Kodagu SP K Ramarajan 

It is said that the minor girl's engagement with the suspect was thwarted by officials from Women and Child Development department on May 9, and later officials had even convinced her parents of not to marry the minor girl.

However, the suspect barged into her house in the night and allegedly kidnapped her. Later, he took her to an area near the periphery of the forest and murdered her after which he fled with her severed head.

Victim's mother too has suffered injuries and is admitted to a hospital for treatment. The reason for the murder will be known after the probing officials have inquired the victim's mother, said the SP.

Madikeri, May 11: Kodagu police have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for the brutal murder of a minor girl within the confines of Kumbaragadige village in Karnataka's Somwarpet taluk. 

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime. 

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered. 

Reportedly, the engagement of the minor girl with the suspect was thwarted by officials from the Women and Child Development department. Subsequently, officials persuaded the girl's parents against proceeding with the marriage. 

However, despite these interventions, the suspect forcibly entered her residence during the night, purportedly abducted her, and later perpetrated the heinous crime in a wooded area on the outskirts of the forest, before absconding with her severed head.

Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday forecast heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in a few districts of Karnataka and said Bengaluru is likely to witness light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from 30 degree Celsius to 22 degree Celsius in the next 24 hours.

Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Hassan, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamrajanagara, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfalls between May 17 and 21, said C S Patil, Director of Meteorological Centre, India Meteorological Department, Bengaluru.

According to India Meteorological Department, some places in Kodagu, Hassan, Mysuru, Mandya and Tumukuru districts will also witness, gusty winds (40-50 kmph) on May 18.

Moderate rain and thundershowers are also likely in Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Ramanagara and Vijayanagara districts.

IMD also predicts light to moderate rain very likely at some places over Bagalkote, Belagavi, Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburgi, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir districts.

On May 16, Channagiri in Davanagere district received the highest rainfall of 6 cm.
