Mangalore, Oct 2: œWill you save the Nethravati river or erase it? this ultimate question will be posed by environmentalists to elected representatives from Dakshina Kannada along with presenting them with water from the river in earthen pots.
With the state government having failed to withdraw the Nethravati diversion (Yettinahole) project or hold talks with the people of the district regarding its implementation within the deadline given by environmentalists, a group of concerned activists have decided to pose this question to the elected representatives of the district on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
Minister for Forests and district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, Minister for Health and Mangalore MLA UT Khader, Minister for Fisheries and Moodbidri MLA Abhaychandra Jain, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mangalore North MLA Moidin Bava and Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo will be presented with the earthen posts and asked to make their stand clear on the controversial issue.
On Thursday, green activists under the banner of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya launched a demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner's office in the city, demanding the elected representatives to make a solid stand on the Nethravati diversion project proposed by the state government.
Several members of the farming community also participated in the demonstration, to emphasise the importance and necessity of Nethravati river to farming and agriculture in Dakshina Kannada.
Speaking on the occasion, Dinesh Holla, convenor of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya, said that the Nethravati was being œsold by the state government and its officials, in the name of supplying drinking water to other districts. The elected representatives are touting the Nethravati river diversion project as a drinking water project merely to reap the monetary benefits of the project themselves. They must resign if they fail to shelve the Nethravati project, he said.
Several activists and representatives took part in the demonstration.
