Mangalore, May 15: A long-pending dream of the people of coastal region was finally realised, when the New Integrated Terminal Building of Mangalore Airport was inaugurated by Praful Patel, the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation in a historical event on Saturday, May 15.

Speaking on the occasion, Praful Patel assured Mangaloreans that the NITB will be declared a full-fledged international airport within a year and the cargo movement will also begin from here soon.

Reasoning the technical problems for the delay in declaring the Mangalore Airport as a full-fledged international one, he said that to gain that status, there must be a runway of 9,000 feet plus. “Currently Mangalore Airport has a run way of 8,000 feet. It is necessary to extend to 9,000 feet before formally declaring it as International Airport,” he said.

Responding to the public demand of launching direct flight to Saudi Arabia from Mangalore, he said that the dream will be realised immediately after extending the run way, which can take at least a year's time.

Praful Patel also predicted that the Mangalore Airport will become one of the biggest and prominent Airports of the country.

M Veerappa Moily, Union Minster for Law, said that with the commissioning of NITB, Mangalore Airport is qualified to be formally declared as a full-fledged international airport. He said that being a fastest growing tier-2 city, Mangalore has all the potential to become a global financial capital.

Moily also called upon the Karnataka State Government to provide appropriate compensation to all those people, who had been evicted from the area in the process of building NITB.

B S Yeddyurappa, Chief Minister of Karnataka, said that he is ready to provide any type of cooperation to Mangalore and its NITB. He said his government is constructing a new sophisticated road between the city and NITB.

The Chief Minister added that the inauguration of NITB in Mangalore and the airport in Mysore is very timely with only few days left for Global Investors Meet in Bangalore, in which investors from all over the world are expected to participate

G Janardan Reddy, State Tourism Minister, said that Karnataka holds the No.1 position in providing basic infrastructures to people. “The state Government is committed to construct more airports in Karnataka”, he said adding that land acquisition is already in process in 13 different parts of the state for the purpose of building new airports. He also said that the Government has cleared the way for constructing a four-lane road to the airport.

RV Deshpande, president of KPCC said that there is a need to launch direct flight from Mangalore to Saudi Arabia. Oscar Fernades, senior Congress leader, also requested the Civil Aviation Minister to consider the public demand of launching direct flight from Mangalore to Saudi Arabia seriously.

The newly inaugurated NITB has an area of approximately 18,220 square metres suitable to handle 500 domestic and 200 international passengers at peak hours. The building is made of glass and chrome. The structure is equipped with all modern passenger amenities such as Central Air Conditioning system, In-line X-Ray Baggage System integrated with departure conveyor system, inclined arrival baggage claim, carousals escalator, new glass lift, Public Address System, Flight Information Display System, Fire fighting System, and parking for about 500 cars.

Krishna J Palemar, District In-charge Minster, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, Abhaychandra Jain, MLA, Rajani Dugganna, Mayor, and many other dignitaries were present.

Mangaluru, May 6: A five-year-old girl from Arendur village of Siddapura taluk of Uttara Kannada district died of Kyasanur Forest Disease (monkey fever) recently.

As her health deteriorated, she was admitted to the KMC Hospital in Mangaluru, where she failed to respond to the treatment and died on Friday night.

It is learned that the KFD is slowly spreading to the newer areas of coastal and malnad areas of Karnataka

According to officials, KFD spreads due to bites of ticks that generally survive on monkeys. This tick bites humans which causes the infection. Humans also contract the disease by coming in contact with cattle bitten by ticks.

Bengaluru: BJP leader Anantkumar Hegde represented Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha segment in Karnataka for six terms and now gynecologist Anjali Nimbalkar is putting up a spirited fight seeking to turn the tide and "deliver" it for the Congress.

Dr Nimbalkar is taking on former Karnataka Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, who replaced Hegde, in this BJP stronghold.

A former Congress MLA, she lost the Assembly elections from Khanapur in Belagavi district last year.

The 62-year-old Kageri, a six-term MLA and a former minister, was also defeated in the Assembly polls from Sirsi.

"In the past 30 years, the voice of Uttara Kannada was not spoken and not even a single question was asked in the Parliament," Nimbalkar said in an apparent dig at Hegde.

If elected, she said her focus is to address the local issues related to forest dwellers, getting them 'patra' for their own land -- a battle they have been fighting for long.

Also on her priority list is getting a multispecialty hospital in Kumta as per people's demand, generating employment and focusing on tourism for the overall development of Uttara Kannada.

"Issues related to forest dwellers -- they want a 'patra' for their own land -- we will try and put forth these issues in the first session itself and we will see to it that maximum applications which are pending with the Central government get cleared during the first session itself," she said in an interview.

"So, our thing is that at least 50 per cent of the jobs should be given to the local Kannadigas in the Central schemes which are implemented in the district," she said.

Noting that Uttara Kannada has a combination of both beaches and temples, Nimbalkar said the district can be developed internationally in a much higher scale than "what actually Goa or Kerala is".

The Congress candidate is also banking on the five guarantee schemes launched by the Siddaramaiah-led government in Karnataka and the promises made by party in its manifesto at the national level.

Responding to a question, she expressed happiness that the Congress has fielded a total of six women candidates out of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka.

While campaigning, Nimbalkar said she was overwhelmed to see a large number of people, especially women, turning up for her rallies despite the intense heat in Uttara Kannada.

"They are very happy that the Congress has given a woman candidate and an educated candidate who herself is a doctor and a gynecologist. So they are excited that, yes, she can be our voice in the Parliament who can fight for our rights," the 47-year-old said.

"I have worked as an MLA (Khanapur), so they have seen my work in the Assembly and the expectations are like, yes, she will be the one who will be speaking for us and that faith is seen in their eyes," she said.

Nimbalkar strongly believes that when women enter any field, it brings a different perspective - be it in terms of management, policy formulation or even as homemakers.

Uttara Kannada is among the 14 constituencies going for polls in Karnataka under second phase on May 7.

Karnataka has 28 Lok Sabha seats and the first phase of polling was held on April 26.

Karwar, May 5: What commenced as a mere exchange of words between spouses swiftly transmuted into a calamitous ordeal, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of their innocent offspring. The heart-wrenching incident unfolded in the serene confines of Halamaddy village in the picturesque expanse of Dandeli, nestled within the idyllic expanse of Uttara Kannada district.

In the throes of a fervent dispute with her spouse, the aggrieved wife, succumbing to an overwhelming surge of emotions, callously propelled their tender six-year-old progeny into the somber depths of a nearby canal, thereafter alerting the local populace to her grievous act.

Promptly apprised of the distressing occurrence by concerned bystanders, the authorities were swiftly summoned to the scene to confront the harrowing aftermath.

Responding to the distress call, the diligent officers of Dandeli rural police swiftly converged upon the site where the innocent child had been cast into the unforgiving waters of the canal, subsequently effecting the retrieval of the child's lifeless form.

Regrettably, it was discerned that a portion of the child's remains had been tragically claimed by the lurking jaws of a predatory crocodile.
