Udupi, Nov 19: The mysterious disappearance of a Class VIII student from Sharada Residential School at Kunjibettu in Udupi, has caused her NRI parents great distress.

Shekhar Shetty and Yashoda Shetty, who live in Muscat, the capital of Sultanate of Oman rushed to Udupi and took the school authorities to task for their alleged negligence towards 13-year-old Eshika Shetty, who went missing on November 15 under mysterious circumstances from the hostel.

Along with helpless parents and relatives dozens of activists and local residents also staged a protest at the school on Wednesday for lack of safety measures. “If the school management acted with responsibility she wouldn't have gone missing,” said Eshika's parents.

“It is the management's responsibility to take care of each and every student of this residential school. How can be they so negligent?” asked Shekhar Shetty.

Calling Eshika a brave and courageous girl, he said that she had even helped in catching a thief in the hostel premises a couple of years ago.

Vidyavanta Acharya, the principal of the school, lamented that the girl was found missing after she went to the hostel room alone from playground during a basketball match on November 15.

He said: “Around 600 students had gathered to watch the game in the evening. Eshika, who was also present among spectators complained of headache and walked towards her hostel room. When passing through teachers' passage, one of the staff inquired her where she was going. She replied that she was going to take rest in the room.”

“After the match, at around 8:15 p.m. all the students collected their respective cell phones to contact their parents as per rules. When the staff went to Eshika's room to give her cell phone, they realized that she was missing,” said the principal.

The principal said that a search was immediately launched in the surroundings. As the staff could not find her a missing complaint was filed at jurisdictional police station at around 10:45 p.m.

The police have taken some of her belongings including a dairy from her room as part of investigation, he said.

Police sources said that the contents found in the girl's diary hint that she had keen interest in music, dance and acting and she wanted to become an actress.

Meanwhile, the parents of the girl also have lodged a complaint with Mulky police station and accused the school management of being irresponsible.

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday condemned the alleged sexual abuse of women involving Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna, asserting that the BJP will not tolerate any insult to women.

Revanna (33) is the BJP-JD(S) alliance candidate for Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, which went to polls on April 26.

Earlier in the day, the JD(S) suspended Revanna from the party with immediate effect.

“The issue regarding Revanna that has been reported in the media is very hurtful and cannot be tolerated in any way,” Shah told a press conference here.

“The BJP’s stand is very clear; we will not tolerate any insult to ‘matri aur nari shakti’ (women empowerment),” he asserted.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, were circulated in Hassan over the last few days.

The home minister said Congress has been alleging that an NDA partner’s candidate is involved in the incident, “but I just want to ask a small question - whose government is there in that state (Karnataka)?”

“The Congress is in power in Karnataka, and this matter must have come to their attention. Why has it not taken any action on it so far? We cannot take any action as law and order is a state issue,” Shah said.

Bagalkot, Apr 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday accused the Congress of planning religion-based reservation in the country for the sake of vote bank politics but asserted that he will not let it happen.

He said this Congress proposal is to appease minorities as the SC/ST and OBC community is now with the BJP.

"In Karnataka, Congress has started a campaign to change the Constitution and to snatch away the rights of SC/ST and OBCs. Our Constitution does not accept religion-based reservation. But the Karnataka government has given part of OBC reservation to Muslims," Modi said.

Addressing a mega election rally in this district headquarters town, he said, "They (Congress) will not settle with this. They had earlier too in their manifesto said about coming out with a law to provide religion-based reservation. There is a similar signal in their manifesto this time."

"I want to make my Dalit, SC/ST and OBC brothers and sisters aware about Congress' intentions. These people on the basis of religion, to keep their vote bank safe, are planning to loot your right which was given by Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Constitution," he added.

Veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa, BJP candidates and MPs from Bagalkot (Bagalkot) and Vijayapura (Bijapur) - P C Gaddigoudar and Ramesh Jigajinagi, respectively - were among those present at the rally.

Noting that most of SC, ST and OBC MPs in the Parliament are from BJP, Modi said, "So they feel that as SC, ST and OBC are with BJP. To gain the trust of minorities, they want to loot from SC, ST and OBC and give it to minorities. Will you let this happen?"

"I want to guarantee today to my Dalit, Adivasi and OBC brothers and sisters. I will not let such intentions of Congress be successful. To protect your rights, your reservation, Modi will go to any extent. I'm assuring you this," he added.
