Dubai ranked
Abu Dhabi, Nov 20: The UAE's commercial capital and its most cosmopolitan city, Dubai, has been identified as the most attractive city in the world to live in in terms of professional and private life, according to an Insead Alumni survey.

Among 15 of the world's prominent cities, Dubai topped the list for the best place to work, ahead of others such as New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Paris, and ranking first in economic dynamism, third in overall attractiveness, and receiving the fourth place in quality of life and cost of living.

In the past too, other surveys have consistently ranked the UAE cities – Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah – among the best cities to live in the Arab World, but the latest survey ranks Dubai as the best in the world, devoid of red tapism, offering better job opportunities, better overall quality of life and competitive salaries.

Last year, a survey of oil and gas professionals pegged Dubai as the most desired work location in the world for them. Nearly 8,000 oil and gas professionals responded to a survey by Rigzone, an online resource for oil and gas information, data and talent recruitment, and they put Dubai on top of their list of destinations where they'd like to earn and spend their oil money.

The latest survey also supports the findings of the 2013 Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI), created by Insead, in partnership with Singapore's Human Capital Leadership Institute and Adecco, which ranks the UAE ahead of other oil-based economies in the Gulf and the Middle East region for attracting and retaining talent, and 19th globally.

The new study, undertaken for the first time by the Insead Alumni Association France, has recorded and assessed the responses of 835 INSEAD Alumni with international working experience according to four all-encompassing assessments drawn from 30 criteria dealing with professional and private life: economic dynamism (quality of labour, access to funding, etc.), quality of life (sports and cultural facilities, air quality, etc.), cost of living (real estate, dining and entertainment, etc.), and finally, the overall attractiveness of the city (young talent, access to technology, etc.)

“To some it might come as a surprise that Dubai has been ranked as the best place to work globally by the Insead Alumni Association, but for Insead in the region this is not a revelation,” said Miguel Lobo, Associate Professor of Decision Sciences and Director of Insead Campus Abu Dhabi.

“Today's business leaders and key decision-makers recognise the dynamism of this country, which leads many to choose to live, work and actively immerse themselves in the regional business landscape,” he said.

“As an Insead alumnus and someone who has been working in the UAE for 12 years, I'm not surprised by the survey findings,” said Sam Barnett, CEO of MBC group and President of Insead Alumni Association in UAE.

“Not only do we see larger numbers of Insead alumni coming to work here each year, but more and more are staying for greater periods of time. The excitement of an emerging market and all the perks of an international city make a compelling combination for many people,” he said.

“There are attractive opportunities to build a career with many of the companies that have started here or with the international companies establishing a foothold in the Middle East,” Barnett said.

Yousuf Almulla, Chief Strategy Officer at Dubai Holding, who is a UAE National and an EMBA alumnus, commented on the results of the survey: “It is very rewarding for the UAE leadership and the country's national and expatriate communities to receive such recognition. All participants in the Insead survey – incorporating 35 different nationalities – have lived and worked in multicultural environments, and still Dubai has topped their preference list as the best city to work in. Our young and talented population is an untapped natural resource: a workforce which with the proper education, guidance and mentorship, can become the future leaders of the global economy and a driving force for continued growth.”

After a half-century of growth and modernisation, and its sustained efforts to diversify beyond oil, the UAE, with a forecasted economic growth of 5 per cent for 2014, has many positive economic elements already in place – including world-class infrastructure, political stability and continued oil revenue. The critical factor for further economic growth and sustainability is the nurturing of local talent in order to create a workforce empowered with the capabilities and skill sets necessary for success in the global economy.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging him to extend all possible help to the victims of JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna's alleged sexual abuse.

In a letter to Siddaramaiah, Gandhi condemned the actions of Revanna, an MP from Hassan in Karnataka, and accused him of enjoying immunity with the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In a veiled attack on Modi, the Congress leader said he has never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women.

"I request you to kindly extend all possible support to the victims," Gandhi said in his letter to the Karnataka chief minister.

"They deserve our compassion and solidarity as they fight their battle for justice. We have a collective duty to ensure that all parties responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to book," he added.

Describing the incidents as "horrific sexual violence" unleashed by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Gandhi alleged that Revanna sexually assaulted and filmed hundreds of women over several years.

"Many who looked up to him as a brother and son were brutalised in the most violent manner and robbed of their dignity. The rape of our mothers and sisters warrants the strictest possible punishment."

"I am deeply shocked to learn that as far back as December 2023, our Home Minister Shri Amit Shah was informed by Shri G Devaraje Gowda about Prajwal Revanna's antecedents, especially his history of sexual violence and the presence of videos filmed by the perpetrator," the former Congress chief said.

He said what is even more shocking is that despite these gruesome allegations being brought to the notice of the seniormost leadership of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre, Modi campaigned and canvassed for a "mass rapist".

"Furthermore, the Union government wilfully allowed him to flee India to derail any meaningful investigation. The deeply perverse nature of these crimes and the absolute immunity enjoyed by Prajwal Revanna with the blessings of the Prime Minister and Home Minister deserves the strongest condemnation," Gandhi said.

"In my two decades in public life, I have never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women. From our wrestlers in Haryana to our sisters in Manipur, Indian women are bearing the brunt of the Prime Minister's tacit support for such criminals," he alleged.

In this backdrop, Gandhi said the Congress has a moral duty to fight for justice for "our mothers and sisters".

"I understand that the Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the grave allegations, and a request has been made to the Prime Minister to cancel Prajwal Revanna's diplomatic passport and get him extradited to India at the earliest," he said.

H D Revanna, the Janata Dal (Secular) MLA from Holenarasipura in Karnataka's Hassan district, is the son of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda and elder brother of former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy. He is facing allegations of sexually abusing women.

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday slammed Rahul Gandhi’s "wealth redistribution promise", stating that only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like that.

“He is dreaming of a revolution. By talking about wealth redistribution, Rahul Gandhi has insulted and humiliated two Congress Prime Ministers who brought market reforms and increased the wealth of the nation,” he added, recalling the contribution of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in economic liberalisation.

Accusing Gandhi of indirectly trying to say that what the two Congress Prime Ministers did was wrong, Gowda said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has torn up their economic reforms like he had torn up an ordinance (which sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs) issued by (the then) Manmohan Singh (government)."

The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo ridiculed the Congress manifesto claiming that only a party that is sure of never coming to power can make as many promises.

“The Congress has promised so many things in its manifesto. The only party that is very sure of never coming to power will promise so much,” Gowda said at a press conference here.

He said the Congress wants to turn this country 'upside down' and the promises made by it indicated that it wants to come to power 'at any cost'.

“Rahul Gandhi wants to do a wealth survey and distribute the wealth. Does he think he is a mass leader,” Deve Gowda said.

Picking up points from the Congress manifesto ‘Nyay Patra’, Gowda said Rahul Gandhi wants to 'give 30 lakh new central government jobs and run this country'.

“There are only 40 lakh sanctioned jobs. How can he create 30 lakh more jobs overnight? How much will he pay these people? Where will he employ them,” he asked.

“Only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like this. (P) Chidambaram was the manifesto committee chairman. Does he agree with Rahul Gandhi’s immature economic ideas,” Gowda said.

Bagalkot, Apr 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday accused the Congress of planning religion-based reservation in the country for the sake of vote bank politics but asserted that he will not let it happen.

He said this Congress proposal is to appease minorities as the SC/ST and OBC community is now with the BJP.

"In Karnataka, Congress has started a campaign to change the Constitution and to snatch away the rights of SC/ST and OBCs. Our Constitution does not accept religion-based reservation. But the Karnataka government has given part of OBC reservation to Muslims," Modi said.

Addressing a mega election rally in this district headquarters town, he said, "They (Congress) will not settle with this. They had earlier too in their manifesto said about coming out with a law to provide religion-based reservation. There is a similar signal in their manifesto this time."

"I want to make my Dalit, SC/ST and OBC brothers and sisters aware about Congress' intentions. These people on the basis of religion, to keep their vote bank safe, are planning to loot your right which was given by Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Constitution," he added.

Veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa, BJP candidates and MPs from Bagalkot (Bagalkot) and Vijayapura (Bijapur) - P C Gaddigoudar and Ramesh Jigajinagi, respectively - were among those present at the rally.

Noting that most of SC, ST and OBC MPs in the Parliament are from BJP, Modi said, "So they feel that as SC, ST and OBC are with BJP. To gain the trust of minorities, they want to loot from SC, ST and OBC and give it to minorities. Will you let this happen?"

"I want to guarantee today to my Dalit, Adivasi and OBC brothers and sisters. I will not let such intentions of Congress be successful. To protect your rights, your reservation, Modi will go to any extent. I'm assuring you this," he added.
