Mangaluru, Dec 18: œWhen we come across accomplished persons, we look at the finished product and not the incessant effort and hard work behind it. We think that genius is in the genetics, but geniuses are not born but made, said rector of St Aloysius Institutions Fr Denzil Lobo.

Delivering the presidential address at the inaugural ceremony of the national level Aloysian Fest 2014-15 hosted by St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, in the college premises here on Thursday, he said that capitalism was the degree of which someone exploited the potential they were born with.

Human beings come with potential and possibilities and they learn as they grow. They learn to think and are able to become creative. However, 95 percent of people do not attain success in life, because they avoid difficulties. To become epic and legendary persons, one needs to put in hard work and long hours to accomplish what you want, he told the students, he said.

Highlighting the importance of showcasing talents of students, principal of the college Fr Swebert D'Silva also placed importance on the necessity of giving opportunity to all the students and congratulated them for promoting harmony and unity among young minds by working together as a team.

Mangaluru, May 3: The Mangaluru City Corporation will resort to water rationing from May 5 as the Thumbe vented dam, which supplies drinking water to the city, is facing a shortage in water storage.

Instead of daily supply, water will be supplied on alternate days, the Executive Engineer (Water Supply) at the corporation said in a release.

The release said that water will be supplied to Mangaluru City North on May 5. There will be no water supply to Mangaluru City North on May 6. Instead water will be supplied to Mangaluru City South on May 6. Likewise the supply on alternate days will continue.

The inflow in the Netravathi has stopped, the release said, requesting people to cooperate with the corporation and not waste water for washing vehicles and other purposes.

An engineer at the corporation said that water level at the dam stood at 4.27 m on Wednesday against the full storage level of 6 m. If water is supplied daily to the entire city (Mangaluru City North and Mangaluru City South) the existing storage will last only for 16 days, the engineer said. Hence the decision to supply water on alternate days has been taken to supply water till May-end.

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has taken a step towards enhancing aircraft safety and has planned to install a Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday. The project involves various works related to the PAL system and aims to be completed in 20 months.

The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the ministry of civil aviation and the civil aviation safety and security regulator. The PAL CAT 1 system will provide pilots with improved visibility of runway 24 and guidance during their final landing approach. The system will be installed 900m from the threshold of runway 24, as this end of the runway accounts for 90% of aircraft landings at the airport.

The PAL will be mounted on approximately 18 lattice structures, which is a unique feature of the project. The lights will be fixed to frangible T-shaped structures. The project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, which has already been completed and is awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.
