Mangaluru, Dec 22: Former union minister and senior Congress leader B Janardhan Poojary said that the state government had taken the right step by introducing the new Bill which allows the state government to take over religious mutts and temples in the state.

Addressing mediapersons at a press conference here on Monday, he said that the state government would not take over the religious institutions under the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Act permanently. As per the amendment to the Act, if any particular mutt or temple is in trouble, the government will intervene in this regard and manage the affairs of the institution until the administration are able to manage it themselves, he informed.

Alleging that the BJP members were trying to spread false information regarding the proposed bill in order to garner opposition to the bill, he said that the government would have the power to intervene and take over the mutts and temples if there were complaints over the incompetency of the management or if there was dispute regarding the right of succession. With the exception of this, the government will not hold possession of the concerned mutt or temple permanently, he stressed.

When asked why the government was proposing to take over merely Hindu religious institutions, the Congress leader said that the bill was being tabled on an experimental basis and it could be extended to other religious institutions in future.

Mr Poojary also alleged that the BJP and Sangh Parivar have fuelled the feeling of hatred among communities by using conversion as a strategy in several states. They are now resorting to converting people by promising them ration cards, homes and a good income, he said, adding that forced conversion was a criminal act.

œThe BJP should remember that only 32 percent of the electorates voted for Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha elections, while 68 percent did not favour him. Where are the promises that Modi declared in his manifesto? Why is he silent when his cabinet ministers are making damaging statements? he demanded.

On the issue of cow slaughter, Mr Poojary clarified that the Congress-led state government had withdrawn only the bill introduced by the previous BJP government in Karnataka. The Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964 continues to exist. The BJP is twisting the reality with its false allegations on the Congress government to fool the people, alleged Mr Poojary.

œDo the Hindus not consume beef? Should Muslims and Christians leave the country or demand for separate one because of this difference? he demanded.

Hassan MP and Lok Sabha election candidate of the BJP-JD(S) alliance Prajwal Revanna, who is facing an inquiry over the alleged sexual abuse of several women, said the truth will prevail.

The MP, who left the country as soon as the election to his constituency ended, has also sought seven days' time to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka government to inquire into the huge cache of about 3,000 explicit videos and photos allegedly pertaining to him, which have gone viral on social media.

“As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to CID Bangalore through my advocate. Truth will prevail soon,” Prajwal, grandson of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda, said in a post on X.

A case has been registered against MLA and former minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal at Holenarasipura on a complaint lodged by their former cook and relative for allegedly sexually harassing her.

She also alleged that Prajwal made video calls to her daughter and spoke in an objectionable manner, which forced her to block him.

The MP who is seeking re-election from Hassan on a JD(S) ticket, shared a letter by his lawyer Arun G to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the SIT, in which he has sought seven days' time to appear before the official because he is abroad.

Mangaluru, May 4: A tragic incident unfurled last evening in Subrahmanya of Kadaba taluk in Dakshina Kananda, where a young gentleman, who had recently entered the bonds of matrimony a mere ten days hence, met his untimely demise due to a lightning strike.

As twilight descended, a tempestuous thunderstorm, accompanied by billowing rain clouds, cast its shadow over the locale.

Somasundar was diligently engaged in the task of piling up dried nuts in the yard to shield them from the impending deluge, when fate cruelly intervened, subjecting him to the fatal force of a lightning bolt.

Despite the expeditious efforts to convey him to Kadaba Community Hospital subsequent to his sudden indisposition, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Somasundar, who operated a car washing enterprise in proximity to Subrahmanya, is mourned by his mother, sister, and wife.

Mangaluru, May 3: The Mangaluru City Corporation will resort to water rationing from May 5 as the Thumbe vented dam, which supplies drinking water to the city, is facing a shortage in water storage.

Instead of daily supply, water will be supplied on alternate days, the Executive Engineer (Water Supply) at the corporation said in a release.

The release said that water will be supplied to Mangaluru City North on May 5. There will be no water supply to Mangaluru City North on May 6. Instead water will be supplied to Mangaluru City South on May 6. Likewise the supply on alternate days will continue.

The inflow in the Netravathi has stopped, the release said, requesting people to cooperate with the corporation and not waste water for washing vehicles and other purposes.

An engineer at the corporation said that water level at the dam stood at 4.27 m on Wednesday against the full storage level of 6 m. If water is supplied daily to the entire city (Mangaluru City North and Mangaluru City South) the existing storage will last only for 16 days, the engineer said. Hence the decision to supply water on alternate days has been taken to supply water till May-end.
