Mangaluru, Mar 2: The authorities decided to go for a temporary solution prevent accidents at Nanthoor junction in the city, even as the National Highway Authority of India is awaiting the Centre’s nod for a permanent solution, i.e. construction of an underpass.
Three days after a ghastly road mishap involving three vehicles claimed three lives and injured three others at the notorious junction authorities visited the spot on Monday and admitted that immediate steps are necessary to resolve the traffic bottle-neck. In a similar accident in November 2014, two youth were killed and seven others sustained severe injuries at the same spot.
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim, who inspected the junction, along with MCC commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati and NHAI officials, said that they were working to provide a temporary solution ahead of the launch of much-awaited underpass project.
Mr Ibrahim said that the people have been repeatedly complaining about the traffic bottle-neck at Nanthoor junction which claimed several lives in recent months and injured dozens of people.
The DC, however, said the construction of underpass, would permanently resolve the problems at the junction.
Meanwhile, ACP (traffic) Udaya Nayak said, said that authorities were considering shifting of the bus stop from Nanthoor junction to a spot near Ullas bar to avoid congestion at the junction.
Shriram Mishra, Project Director, NHAI, Mangaluru, earlier informed that NHAI had sought approval for acquiring 0.5 hectares of land for building the underpass at an estimated cost of about Rs. 58 crore. “The 3-D (final land acquisition) proposal has been sent to Delhi,” he said and added that the NHAI had in its possession other land required for building the underpass.
