Mangaluru, Mar 4: Five persons including an engineer have been arrested by the sleuths of the Central Crime Branch of Mangaluru City Police in connection with a communal clash occurred last week at K C Road Junction under the limits of Ullal Police Station.
The arrested are Abdul Sattar (38), Niyaz (32), Abdul Nasir (30), Shabbeer (30) and Mohammed Basheer (36), all hailing from Talapady and surrounding areas, where a clash erupted between miscreants of two communities on February 25, three days ahead of Hindu Samajotsav held in Mangaluru on March 1.
It is learnt that among the arrested Abdul Nasir is an engineer by profession. Police sources said that most of the accused were activists of Popular Front of India. As many as six petrol bombs also have been seized from the accused, police said.
The clash had erupted when a group of people were putting up buntings, banners and saffron flags in preparation of Brahma Kalashotsav at KC Road junction in the night.
It is alleged that miscreants belonging to a particular outfit deliberately switched off the lights causing inconvenience for those who were saffronizing the junction. As a result a fight broke out and stones and soda bottles were pelted from both the sides. At least three police personnel also had sustained injuries during the clash. Hours after this clash, miscreants belonging to a communal outfit had set around 20 shops on fire near Thokkottu junction causing huge losses. Most of the shops belonged to Muslims.
