Udupi, Mar 3: A lorry plying from Mangaluru to Harihar transporting boats caught fire after coming in contact with an electric wire resulting in loss of lakhs of rupees when the fire spread to a godown at Merdi in Kundapur taluk of Udpi district.
It is learnt that the lorry came into contact with live electric wires on the side of the road, and unknowing to the driver, the wires were dragged along with the lorry causing them to get short-circuited and sparking a fire. Once the sparks snowballed into a fire, it also spread to a nearby godown stocked with bags of fertilisers reducing the building and gunny bags to ashes.
A few persons staying in houses right next to the godown fled outside to escape the flames that engulfed the entire structure.
The fire is learnt to have caused a lot of damage to the godown belonged to Nagesh Seregar. The fertiliser bags were also reduced to ashes resulting in loss of goods worth lakhs of rupees.
Personnel from the fire service department in Kundapur who arrived at the spot, swiftly began to douse the fire with the help of two fire engines. They succeeded in containing the fire without allowing it to spread to other buildings, thus averting a major tragedy at the scene.
