Yogendra, Bhushan expose Kejriwal as AAP rift deepens

March 27, 2015

New Delhi, Mar 27: In further escalation of infighting, AAP leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav on Friday mounted an attack on party convenor Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of stifling internal democracy and adopting unfair means to capture power.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the two leaders alleged that any issue raised by them was being projected as questioning Mr. Kejriwal’s leadership and attempts to remove him from the post of AAP’s national convenor.

BHUSHAN YOGENDRA

Mr. Bhushan even claimed that Mr. Kejriwal had suggested that he will form a regional party with all party MLAs saying “he cannot work with us“.

The attack on Mr. Kejriwal by the two founding members of the party came a day before the crucial meeting of the AAP’s national council which is likely to deliberate on the fate of Mr. Bhushan and Mr. Yadav and other major issues.

Mr. Yadav said Mr. Bhushan and he were fighting to “save the soul of the struggle” that gave birth to the party.

Mr. Yadav said: “It (the AAP) is not an ordinary party, it was born out of a revolution to clean the system, end corruption and give power to the common people. People have high hopes from this party.”

“But the developments in the last one month have disappointed many. We are fighting to save the soul of the struggle that gave birth to this party.”

The AAP is the only party where questions of transparency and internal democracy are at least being discussed, Mr. Yadav said.

Addressing a press conference with Mr. Bhushan, Mr. Yadav said: “Does the party which professes in swaraj have swaraj in itself… in its own affairs?”

Terming the question of national convenor of the AAP as a non issue, Mr. Yadav asked, “Why is it that when one raises even a single question it is connected directly to Arvind Kejriwal.”

“All we suggested was that internal Lokpal at least examine issues such as alleged horse trading, Delhi Law Minister’s fake degree and independence of local party bodies,” he said.

Posing a series of questions to the AAP top brass, Mr. Yadav said, “Will the AAP end up becoming another regional party? Or will its national ambitions persist?

“Will the AAP practice the transparency that it preaches to other parties or end up like Congress or BJP?”

Alleging that Mr. Yadav and he had been “repeatedly told to resign by those close to Arvind Kejriwal”, Mr. Bhushan said that he had texted Mr. Kejriwal to solve this issue. “It’s been 11 days since, but he didn’t have time for us.”

“We were told time and again that ‘Arvind Kejriwal doesn’t want to work’ with us,” he claimed.

While further alleging that Mr. Kejriwal wanted to form a breakaway unit of all 67 AAP MLAs in Delhi, Mr. Bhushan said, “Arvind Kejriwal told me he was the National Convenor, would do as he deemed fit.

“Arvind Kejriwal told me he was never part of any organisation where his authority wasn’t supreme.”

Mr. Bhushan, said, “Time and again, I told Arvind Kejriwal that having only a clear conscience wasn’t enough.”

“Told Arvind Kejriwal that the means, and not always just the end, also matter,” he added.

Dismissing reports of Mr. Yadav’s and his resignation from the party as white lies, Mr. Bhushan said that they had never asked Mr. Kejriwal to step down as national convenor.

“That they agreed to all our demands is also a lie; neither is the party yet under RTI nor is there internal swaraj.”

He also demanded that the March 28, 2015 national executive meeting of the party to be videographed “in interests of transparency”.

Mr. Yadav said Mr. Kejriwal’s supporters had embarked on a slander campaign against him.

While endorsing Mr. Bhushan on the issue of Mr. Kejriwal’s resignation, AAP leader Anand Kumar said that Mr. Yadav Mr. Bhushan themselves supported the motion to step down from the political affairs committee.

Mr. Kumar said, “Whoever disagrees with us is wrong, a traitor, after power — these are usual allegations that accompany dissent.”

He said the national executive meeting should be broadcast live in the interests of transparency.

While daring party leader Aashish Khetan to prove that he broached topic of handling the party’s Haryana unit, Mr. Yadav said, “This isn’t a struggle for power, but a struggle to ensure internal democracy in and a new politics from the AAP.”

“Our struggle is for ensuring that the AAP delivers on the alternative politics that it professes,” he added. “We will put our suggestions in front of volunteers for consideration tomorrow.”

Mangaluru, May 6: A five-year-old girl from Arendur village of Siddapura taluk of Uttara Kannada district died of Kyasanur Forest Disease (monkey fever) recently.

As her health deteriorated, she was admitted to the KMC Hospital in Mangaluru, where she failed to respond to the treatment and died on Friday night.

It is learned that the KFD is slowly spreading to the newer areas of coastal and malnad areas of Karnataka

According to officials, KFD spreads due to bites of ticks that generally survive on monkeys. This tick bites humans which causes the infection. Humans also contract the disease by coming in contact with cattle bitten by ticks.

Bengaluru: BJP leader Anantkumar Hegde represented Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha segment in Karnataka for six terms and now gynecologist Anjali Nimbalkar is putting up a spirited fight seeking to turn the tide and "deliver" it for the Congress.

Dr Nimbalkar is taking on former Karnataka Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, who replaced Hegde, in this BJP stronghold.

A former Congress MLA, she lost the Assembly elections from Khanapur in Belagavi district last year.

The 62-year-old Kageri, a six-term MLA and a former minister, was also defeated in the Assembly polls from Sirsi.

"In the past 30 years, the voice of Uttara Kannada was not spoken and not even a single question was asked in the Parliament," Nimbalkar said in an apparent dig at Hegde.

If elected, she said her focus is to address the local issues related to forest dwellers, getting them 'patra' for their own land -- a battle they have been fighting for long.

Also on her priority list is getting a multispecialty hospital in Kumta as per people's demand, generating employment and focusing on tourism for the overall development of Uttara Kannada.

"Issues related to forest dwellers -- they want a 'patra' for their own land -- we will try and put forth these issues in the first session itself and we will see to it that maximum applications which are pending with the Central government get cleared during the first session itself," she said in an interview.

"So, our thing is that at least 50 per cent of the jobs should be given to the local Kannadigas in the Central schemes which are implemented in the district," she said.

Noting that Uttara Kannada has a combination of both beaches and temples, Nimbalkar said the district can be developed internationally in a much higher scale than "what actually Goa or Kerala is".

The Congress candidate is also banking on the five guarantee schemes launched by the Siddaramaiah-led government in Karnataka and the promises made by party in its manifesto at the national level.

Responding to a question, she expressed happiness that the Congress has fielded a total of six women candidates out of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka.

While campaigning, Nimbalkar said she was overwhelmed to see a large number of people, especially women, turning up for her rallies despite the intense heat in Uttara Kannada.

"They are very happy that the Congress has given a woman candidate and an educated candidate who herself is a doctor and a gynecologist. So they are excited that, yes, she can be our voice in the Parliament who can fight for our rights," the 47-year-old said.

"I have worked as an MLA (Khanapur), so they have seen my work in the Assembly and the expectations are like, yes, she will be the one who will be speaking for us and that faith is seen in their eyes," she said.

Nimbalkar strongly believes that when women enter any field, it brings a different perspective - be it in terms of management, policy formulation or even as homemakers.

Uttara Kannada is among the 14 constituencies going for polls in Karnataka under second phase on May 7.

Karnataka has 28 Lok Sabha seats and the first phase of polling was held on April 26.

Bengaluru: In a shocking revelation, a former member of Hassan Zilla Panchayat (ZP) has accused incumbent JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna of raping her multiple times over three years and videographing the alleged crime.

A case was registered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) based on the statement by the 44-year-old survivor on Wednesday, May 1.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman claimed that when she was a ZP member she used to visit the MLAs and MPs for various development works.

In one such instance in 2021, she met Prajwal seeking his help to get hostel seats for some female students at a local college. The woman, in her statement, said that since the MP was busy, she was asked to meet him the next day.

“The following day I visited the MP at his office and the MP's quarters in Hassan. The staff present there told me to wait on the first floor as there were many others in the hall. Prajwal spoke to some of the women waiting there, spoke with them and sent them off until I was the only one left,” the woman alleged.

As per the survivor, the MP then called her inside a room and she obliged.

“He held my hand, pulled me inside and locked the door. When I asked him why was he closing the door, he told me nothing would happen and made me sit on the bed. He said my husband should talk less and warned me of the consequences. He also said that because of my husband, his mother, Bhavani Revanna, missed the MLA ticket. He told me that if my husband wants to grow politically, I should listen to him [Prajwal],” the woman alleged.

Next, Prajwal allegedly told the woman to lie down on the bed and undress. When the woman refused and said that she would shout, Prajwal allegedly threatened her that he had a gun and warned of dire consequences for her and her husband.

The woman alleged that Prajwal took out his mobile phone and then raped her.

“He raped me and sexually assaulted me and recorded the act on his mobile phone,” the woman alleged. “He threatened to leak the video if I ever spoke about it and told me to be there whenever he wanted. After that, he used to video call me frequently, ask me to be naked during the call and raped me in multiple instances.”

The woman claimed that she was scared and did not make the incident public and chose to come forward after she learnt of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Karnataka government to probe the alleged Hassan sex scandal.

A case was registered under Sections 376(2)(n) (commits rape repeatedly on the same woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1)(physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and 354C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Prajwal is also accused in a sexual harassment case along with his father, Holenarasipur MLA HD Revanna, registered at the Holenarasipur police station in Hassan on April 28.
