Kathmandu, April 26: The devastating earthquake in Nepal has destroyed or badly damaged many Hindu temples both in the Kathmandu Valley and elsewhere.

Saturday's 7.9 magnitude quake and aftershocks throughout the day destroyed around 80 percent of the temples in Basantapur Durbar Square in Kathmandu, the Kantipur News reported on Sunday.

These include the Kasthamandap temple, the Panchtale temple, the Dasa Avtar temple and the Krishna temple.

Kasthamandap, which inspired the name Kathmandu, is an early 16th century wooden monument.

Eighty percent of Nepal's nearly 29 million people are Hindus. Buddhists account for 10 percent and Muslims four percent.

Siobhan Heanue, a reporter with ABC News Australia, told CNN that she was wandering at an ancient temple complex in Kathmandu when the earthquake struck. Several temples collapsed around her.

Scores of centuries-old historical monuments, including the iconic Dharahara tower here, were reduced to rubble in the powerful tremblor that claimed more than 2,000 lives.

A few monuments, including the Kumari temple and the Taleju Bhawani, have partially collapsed, the Kantipur daily said.

Dozens of temples and historical buildings in Patan and Bhaktapur have also collapsed or have been partially damaged.

The report said the top of the Jay Bageshwori temple at Gaushala and parts of the famed Pashupatinath temple, Swyambhunath, Boudhanath Stupa and Ratna Mandir have suffered partially damage.

In Patan, the Char Narayan Mandir, the Taleju Temple, the Hari Shankar temple and Uma Maheshwor temple have suffered destruction. And so has the Machhindranath temple at Bungmati, it added.

Several bodies, including those of women and children, were recovered from the remains of the collapsed monuments, the daily said.

Rescue teams said at least 70 bodies were recovered from the debris of the Dharahara tower and more bodies from the remains of the temples in Durbar Square.

The Durbar Square is one of the most popular tourist hotspots in Kathmandu, for foreign and domestic tourists. It is a favourite hangout place for locals.

In Tripureshwor, the Kal Mochan Ghat, a Mughal-architecture inspired temple, was destroyed and the nearby Tripura Sundari temple also suffered significant damage, the daily said.

In Bhaktapur, several monuments, including the Fasi Deva temple, the Chardham temple and the 17th century Vatsala Durga Temple were fully or partially destroyed, it said.

"Outside the Valley, the Manakamana Temple in Gorkha, the Gorkha Durbar, the Palanchowk Bhagwati in Kavrepalan Chowk, the Rani Mahal in Palpa, the Janaki Mandir in Janakpur, the Churiyamai in Makwanpur, the Dolakha Bhimsensthan in Dolakha and the Nuwakot Durbar were partially destroyed."

The newspaper quoted Prushottam Lochan Shrestha, a historian, as saying that these monuments had been lost forever as rebuilding them was technically difficult and expensive.

"We have lost most of the monuments that had been designated as World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur," he said. "They can't be restored to their original state."

Mangaluru, May 20: In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a Class 3 girl student tragically lost her life due to the collapse of the compound wall of Harekala Hajabba Government Senior Primary School in Newpadpu, situated on the outskirts of the city, during the evening hours of Monday, May 20, following heavy rains.

The young victim, identified as Shazia Banu (7), was the cherished daughter of Siddique and Jamila, residing in Newpadpu. She met her untimely demise in the unfortunate accident.

Over the past two days, students from the National Service Scheme (NSS) at Mudipu Undergraduate College had been engaged in activities at the Harekala Hajabba School.

Shazia, who lived in close proximity to the school, eagerly participated in these endeavours. Tragically, while playing near the school compound gate before returning home in the evening, the wall collapsed suddenly, fatally injuring her. Despite the prompt efforts of local residents to rescue her, Shazia succumbed to her injuries.

The incessant rainfall in Ullal taluk since the morning had significantly weakened the structural integrity of the compound wall, ultimately resulting in its collapse. Officials from the Harekala gram panchayat and the Konaje police promptly responded to the scene and have initiated an investigation into the matter.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Sunday said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing into sexual abuse charges against Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, will not be going abroad to bring him back, and the Interpol will share information about him.

He also cautioned political leaders about making public statements or sharing information in connection with the case, which is sensitive.

The 33-year-old Prajwal Revanna, who is grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, is facing charges of sexually abusing several women.

The scandal has raised a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

Prajwal Revanna is said to have flown abroad on April 27, a day after the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka was held.

He was BJP-JD(S) alliance's joint candidate from Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls in the first phase.

"No, there is no such option. Blue Corner Notice has been issued and the Interpol will share the information. The respective country in which he is found or identified - they will inform them (Interpol) and then our agencies, the CBI will get to know, and through them we will get to know."

"So far there is no information," Parameshwara said.

He was responding to a question on reports about the SIT team travelling abroad in connection with the case.

Speaking to reporters, he said, "Investigation is going on, not to affect the investigation we don't want to share any information."

Responding to a question on Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's statement alleging conspiracy behind the arrest of BJP leader Devaraje Gowda, for making allegations against Congress leaders in connection with the case, Parameshwara said, "If anyone says anything I cannot react to it. We cannot respond to every public statement. As this is a serious case, we cannot share information until the investigation is completed."

"My request to the public and to our leaders is to be cautious while making statements. If not, based on the statements given by them, we may have to call them for investigation and record their statement under 41 A of CrPC," he added.

Asked whether JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy will also be served notice, the Minister said he is a former CM and that he believes that the former has taken this case seriously.

"Before giving any statements on this case or before sharing any information in the public domain, one has to be cautious, and this applies to all," he added.

devarajegowda.jpg

A day after National Commission for Women said no woman from Hassan approached the national body to file complaints against Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna, a new FIR accusing BJP leader Devaraje Gowda of abusing and assaulting a woman has come to light.

The FIR against Gowda was filed by a woman at the Holenarasipura town police station on April 1, after her husband had filed a complaint against the BJP leader on March 30.

The purported victim's husband has alleged in his plaint that Gowda barged into their home, and threatened the couple while the BJP leader also abused the woman.

Gowda, notably, flagged Prajwal Revanna's case to the saffron party.

Reacting to the allegations levelled against him, the BJP politico posted a video on Facebook where he details how he met the woman and her husband in his office. He also claims that the allegations against him are a plot and false.

It must be noted here that a Special Investigation Team is currently probing the sexual assault cases against Prajwal Revanna who along with his driver Karthik is no longer in the country. A Blue Corner notice is also in place to apprehend the son of H D Revanna who himself is placed under judicial custody till May 14.

In a major twist to the entire case— the woman in the FIR alleged that Devaraje Gowda who apprised BJP of the sex videos involving Prajwal Revanna— has been harassing her for the past 10 months under the guise of helping her sell a property.

The woman also said that she came in contact with Gowda during the process involving the property that she wanted to sell. However, on the pretext of guiding her, the woman alleged that the whistleblower BJP leader physically assaulted and harassed her while Gowda also threatened the couple.

The woman has now sought police protection for herself and family. Further levelling allegations against Gowda in her plaint, she said that the politico had taken her to an isolated place where he assaulted her and threatened to kill the couple.

Former chief minister of Karnataka and Prajwal Revanna's uncle H D Kumaraswamy recently demanded a CBI probe in the Prajwal Revanna matter. However, Home Minister G Parameshwara turned down the demand for the investigation to be handed over to CBI.
