Elder brother was a Class 9 student and the younger one was a Class 6 student at Holy Family School in Meramajalu, Bantwal.
The tragedy occurred when the brothers along with a group of school friends ventured into the river to take a bath after playing cricket together in the evening.
It was younger brother Suhail, who accidentally slipped into a deep gorge in the river bed. Sahil, who noticed his brother struggling in the water, jumped and tried to rescue him. But, unfortunately both were drowned in front of the eyes of their helpless friends, who kept on screaming for help.
The victims were the first two sons among four children of Muhammad Is’haq, who works in Dubai to take care of his family. Aggrieved father is expected to return home for the last rites of the children.
Local residents have held indiscriminate and unscientific sand mining which created deep pits in the river bed responsible for the tragedy. The area where the tragedy took place is notorious for illegal sand mining.
