Mangaluru, Jun 30: Suratkal police have been successful in arresting a total of six accused in connection with two separate cases of assault that occurred in Suratkal limits after noon on Sunday.
It is said that the five accused assaulted Haidar, Shawid and Mohammed Arafat, all aged around 20 years without any provocation and snatched Rs 15,000 from them. The assailants also assaulted a woman, who was waiting for bus, for raising her objection.
As an act of revenge against the earlier assault, miscreants are said to have attacked Idya resident Ashok Bhat and slashed him in the neck with a knife, while he was plying near Munchur with his wife in a two-wheeler on Sunday night.
Out of the two accused, the police arrested Idya resident Hameed Safwan (27) in connection with the attempt to murder case. It is said that the accused were lying in wait for Ashok Bhat while he was returning from his brother's house and attacked him after following him in a motorbike.
The accused were produced before court and remanded to judicial custody.
Following this incident, tight security arrangements had been made in Surathkal to prevent the situation from escalating.
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner S Murugan visited the hospital on Sunday night and issued guidance on the case.
Panambur ACP Madan Gaonkar, Suratkal PI Cheluvaraj and Panambur PI A C Lokesh were in-charge of the security arrangements.
Former minister Krishna Palemar paid a visit to the hospital on Monday morning and enquired about the condition of Ashok Bhat. He urged that the culprits should be arrested as soon as possible.
