Mangaluru, Jul 1: In today's world where media outlets have a tendency to blow negative things out of proportion, it is the responsibility of media to uphold their credibility, said chairman of Alva's Educational Foundation Dr M Mohan Alva.

press day 1 2

Delivering the inaugural speech at a programme organised by Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union (DKDWJU), Mangaluru Press Club and Patrika Bhavan Trust to mark the 172nd Press Day here on Wednesday, he said that at a time when readers look to newspapers for the truth, it is the duty of the newspapers to report the truth. It is very disturbing that the media has begun resorting to fabricating news. This has to be controlled along with the tendency to encash on negative portrayal of news, he said.

He said that there was also a tendency of appeasing advertisers as newspapers have to generate revenue for their survival. It is the responsibility of media of elevating itself to a higher level through ethical journalism, he said.

Speaking on the topic "Current trends in journalism", senior journalist N Gururaj said that when newspapers were a league of their own, concern for society gained importance over other concerns. However when newspapers became to be commercialised, they began to be used for different interests for their own gains. Earlier, those working in the newspaper field would find satisfaction in the credibility of the information they published, but now, more importance is given to advertising the news in most media outlets, he said, adding that the zeal was mostly missing among journalists who were more impulsive in today's world.

However, there is satisfaction in the fact that some journalists upheld their ethics and integrity despite the pressure and other constraints they faced, he noted.

Udayavani news bureau chief Manohar Prasad spoke on the occasion, providing insight and advice to newcomers in the journalism field.

Exhibition of newspapers

Following the programme, an exhibition of editions of various newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines from the personal collection of Umesh Yekkar was organised. Umesh Yekkar is a keen collector who has been enthusiastically collecting editions of newspapers and magazines from several years.

Among the newspapers displayed in the exhibition were editions of international dailies such as Gulf Times from Qatar, Inquirer from Philippines, Sunday Times from Sri Lanka, The Telegraph from United Kingdom, De Telegraaf from Denmark, Daily Times from Islamabad, nrc.next from Netherlands, Le Figaro from France and The Tribune from USA.

Editions of Indian newspapers such as The Pioneer from Lucknow, Daily Excelsior from Jammu & Kashmir, Andaman Herald, The Hitavadi, DNA, Navabharath and regional newspapers such as Suddi Sanje, Nayakamani, Namma Kamala, Times of Bedra, Prajamata, Gadinaada Sanchaari, Tuluver and several others.

Rare editions such as the first edition of Udayavani Kannada daily printed on January 1, 1970, the first edition of Mungaru newspaper printed in 1984, early editions of Kannada Vani and Navabharatha newspapers printed in 1964 and an early edition of Sudha magazine published in 1965 were among the collection displayed in the exhibition.

Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, Mr Yekkar said that he had begun collecting early editions of newspapers and magazines, including international dailies, since the year 1960, and had so far collected around 2,500 editions of Kannada newspapers and over 1,000 editions of English and international dailies as a hobby. He was felicitated in the inaugural programme.

Hubballi, May 17: Karnataka Police have arrested the killer, Vishwa, also known as Girish, in the sensational Anjali Ambigera murder case, police said on Friday.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Vishwa was a habitual thief who exploited innocent young women. The accused is also a drunkard and was caught while attempting to commit theft. He was also part of a gang which stole bikes.

The accused targeted gullible young women, enacting a drama of love and playing the emotional card to forcefully extort gold, silver, and cash from them. When Anjali did not agree to any of his attempts to rob her and outrightly rejected his offer to go with him to Mysuru city, he brutally killed her.

The police had formed two teams to hunt down the killer. One of the teams was searching in the south Karnataka region, and another team, which launched a hunt in Davanagere, nabbed him. The accused was arrested by the police on Thursday.

The police could not catch him sooner as the killer did not carry a mobile phone and did not use his phone for 15 days, before murdering Anjali. The jurisdictional Bendigeri Police were aware of the killer's history, but even after the complaint by the girl’s family, they showed "utter negligence".

The 24-year-old Vishwa entered Anjali Ambigera's (20) residence at 5.30 A.M. on Wednesday and stabbed the young woman multiple times before she could react. Vishwa dragged Anjali Ambigera all over the house, kicking and stabbing her. Later, he pushed her into the kitchen where he stabbed her repeatedly.

Despite efforts by Anjali’s grandmother and two sisters to stop the attacker, he killed her and managed to flee. The incident occurred in the Veerapura Oni area within the jurisdiction of the Bendigeri Police Station.

Vishwa had been blackmailing Anjali and pressurising her to accompany him to Mysuru without informing her parents. The incident which took place close on the heels of MCA student Neha Hiremath’s brutal murder by the jilted lover has raised concern over the safety of women all across the state.

The BJP had demanded the resignation of Home Minister G. Parameshwara while the Congress leaders have also demanded that the Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar should be transferred for failing to sensitise the police force regarding issues of women’s safety.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and other state ministers on Saturday rubbished allegations about their role in the circulation of pen drives containing explicit videos involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna.

BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda, who is in custody after being arrested in a sexual abuse case and is also facing charges of video leak, on Friday alleged that Shivakumar and four other ministers are behind the circulation of the pen drives and was being fixed in false cases as he did not agree to be part of their plan.

He has even alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore by Shivakumar to "bring a bad name" to the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and to tarnish the image of JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy in Prajwal Revanna's obscene video case.

Speaking to reporters here, Shivakumar said, "Better, let him (Gowda) file a case before Lokayukta or any other agency. I think he has some problems mentally. I'm very sorry, the national and state media shouldn't have picked up such baseless allegations. A person who is in jail, how can he make such allegations? All these are baseless. I don't want to comment."

Asked if he will be filing any defamation case against Gowda, he said, "I don't want to make any comment or speak on a person who is mentally sick. I appeal to his party people to get him a good treatment." Shivakumar also asserted that his government's commitment to get justice for women victims of the sexual abuse case, and expressed confidence about the Special Investigation Team's (SIT) ongoing probe.

While being taken from court in Hassan, Gowda on Friday spoke to media and alleged that Shivakumar is behind pen drive case, and a team of four Ministers -- N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister -- was formed to handle this, with an intention to bring bad name to BJP, PM Modi and Kumaraswamy.

He said Shivakumar had asked him to say that Kumaraswamy is behind the distribution of pen drives, but as he did not agree to it, he is being fixed in false cases.

Minister Priyank Kharge said Gowda has alleged that three responsible ministers in the state government were part of a team and that there was a conspiracy. "We will discuss whatever legal course, we will take it."

"Devaraje Gowda might be doing this to defame Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah. If he had a Rs 100 crore offer, he should have told Amit Shah (Union Home Minister) and get it investigated. He could have got CBI, ED, or IT raids done. Why didn't he do it? Claims have been made that he (Gowda) was sent Rs 5 crore as advance at a club, let them get CCTV footage and see who were all there," Kharge said.

While speaking to reporters here, he further said Gowda is a lawyer. When he was deposed before the Judge he should have told about the documents he has and should have presented to the court.

Minister Chaluvarayaswamy said allegations about the role of Shivakumar and a team of ministers being formed to oversee the circulation of pen drives are 'baseless', and he questioned Gowda's morality to make such accusations.

"If Gowda proves that Chaluvarayaswamy, Priyank Kharge and Krishna Byre Gowda had held a meeting on this case and we as a team were given responsibility and we were involved in this case, I will apologise," he said and alleged that Gowda was being used to mislead and deviate from the main case of sexual abuse.
