July 5, 2015

Bengaluru, Jul 5: The State has reaped a rich harvest in the UPSC Civil Services Exam, 2014. More than 60 candidates from the State have cracked the civil services with Udupi lad Nitish K topping the list with 8th all India ranking.

rich harvest
Nitish K, an engineering graduate from PES Institute of Engineering, Bengaluru, managed to feature in top 10 AIR list in his third attempt.

Son of K Ramakrishna Hebbar, an employee of Karnataka Bank and Bharati, a homemaker, Nitish hails from Kukkehalli in Perdur of Udupi district.

Speaking to media from Shimla, where he is undergoing training for Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Nitish said he is on cloud nine for achieving a good ranking and thanked his parents, uncle, a DySP with Karnataka police and his friend Vinay for their unflinching support.

In his first attempt in 2012, Nitish cleared the Prelims, Mains but missed the ranking by ten marks in the interview. However, he was able to clear all three rounds in his second attempt and gained 547th ranking in 2013. He joined Indian Audit and Accounts Service. Nitish said that he had planned his studies meticulously and studied for 10 to 12 hours a day. His optional subject was Maths.

Koratagere lad excels

Cracking the UPSC exams is entirely dependent on one’s will to do it rather than which city one prepares in and which coaching centre one attends to. This is the belief with which Balaji D K studied for the civil services examination. An alumnus of Bangalore University, Balaji has secured AIR 36 in the UPSC exam 2014. The 25-year-old is a native of Koratagere in Tumakuru district.

Balaji, who opted Kannada literature as optional subject, cleared the exam in his second attempt. “In my first attempt I did not qualify for the interview. I worked hard this time. I was very calm during the interview. It felt more like a chat with elders sitting before me. I think it is very important for a candidate to be himself and not be pretentious before the panel,” he said.

Balaji completed MBA at Canara Bank School of Management, Bangalore University. He studied degree in SSMRV College Jayanagar. He has been preparing from 2012. His father works at Teeta branch of Kaveri Gramina Bank and mother is a homemaker. His grandfather was interested in social service, and he had given him orientation for the same. His teacher Sachidananda Rao was a huge inspiration, said Balaji.

Software to civil services

Another candidate from the City who has made it to the top (AIR 180) in the exam is Atul Vikas Kulkarni. Atul completed his computer science engineering from NIE College in Mysuru. He took up a job at Mindtree and worked there as a software engineer for three years. But he quit his job to pursue a PG course in Urban Policy at Tata Institute of Social Sciences. After working as a consultant at Nasik Municipal Corporation, he took up a job in Arghyam, an NGO in the City.

His interests are diverse, ranging from painting and classical music to making handicrafts and paper crafts. Atul’s dissertation, Land, water and local people - A case study of the Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor', has been published into a book.

Runs in the blood

K Arif Hafeez, who secured the 135 rank in the UPSC is the son of a retired IPS officer, H A Hafeez. He is a student of Cathedral High School in the City and and BE in Information Science from UVCE.

His brother, K Asif Hafeez, cleared the UPSC exam in 2010 and secured a 610th rank and is presently in the Indian Railway Personnel Service. What’s more, even his sister, who has completed her BDS, is also preparing for her KAS and UPSC civil service exams. “It feels unreal as I did not expect such a good rank. If one works hard and is sincere they can surely crack it,” he said.

Farmer’s son shines

Every year when the UPSC results are declared, tales of a few candidates from humble backgrounds making the cut by their sheer grit and determination, offer inspiration to many.

Here is one such awe-inspiring story. Sukhputra N O, who has secured the 1168 rank in the civil services exam, is a son of agrarian parents from Kundevu village in Chitraduraga district.

“Of the five attempts, I had managed to reach the interview stage on three occasions and I am glad that I finally cracked it this time,” a beaming Sukhputra said.

After completing his school education at his village, Sukhputra completed his graduation from Government Science College in Chitradurga.

Hailing from a remote village in parched Chitradurga, Sukhaputra faced a major hurdle in mastering English, however that he overcame this difficulty with his dedication. “I would read English newspapers and books and then jot down the tricky words and refer to a dictionary later,” he said. Not the one to be content, Sukhputra will be giving the exam again. “With this rank, I think I will either get into the police service or revenue service. However, I will give the exam again till I achieve good ranking and become eligible to Indian Administration Service,” he said.

Mangaluru/Udupi: The Dakshina Kannada and Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituencies recorded a tentative voter turnout of 77.4% and 76.1% respectively until 6 pm on Friday. In the 2019 polls, Dakshina Kannada recorded 77.9%, while Udupi recorded a 75.8% voter turnout.

The DK Lok Sabha constituency recorded a poll percentage of 71.8% at 5 pm. Among the constituencies, Sullia recorded a maximum of 78.4%, followed by Belthangady at 75.6%, Puttur at 75.2%, Bantwal at 73.7%, Mangalore at 73.5%, Mangalore City North at 69.8%, and Mangalore City South at 61.8%.

Urban apathy continued, with Mangalore City South recording the lowest polling percentage.

Meanwhile, Banjarumale, a remote village in Belthangady taluk, recorded 100% polling with all 111 voters showing up two hours before polling ended at 6pm.

Another interior polling station at Elaneer in the same taluk recorded 82% polling at 4 pm. The booth has 471 voters. The district has a total of 18,18,127 voters, with 9,30,928 females, 8,87,122 men, and 77 transgender individuals.

A good number of people turned out to vote during the early hours. Voters are bearing the scorching sun while stepping out to exercise their franchise as heat wave is sweeping through the state.

The polling process remained largely peaceful, with long queues observed at polling stations from 7 am onwards in several polling stations. However, technical glitches caused delays at a polling station in Karopady, and at St. Xavier School Bejai, where polling was reportedly delayed by nearly two hours.

Polling staff at a booth near the Mulki police station mistakenly marked the wrong finger with ink during voting. They reportedly applied ink to the index finger of the right hand. According to sources, at least 50 individuals had their index finger of the right hand inked. Deputy Commissioner Mullai Mulihan clarified, "The matter was promptly addressed by the sector office. This error affected 8-9 voters"

A total of 18.18 lakh voters in the Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency and 15.85 lakh in Udupi-Chikmagalur hold the power to determine the fate of candidates competing for their respective segments. The polling process is currently underway across 1,876 booths in Dakshina Kannada and 1,842 polling stations in the Udupi-Chikmagalur segment.

In Dakshina Kannada, a closely contested battle is anticipated between Captain Brijesh Chowta representing the BJP and Padmaraj R Poojary from the Congress. Meanwhile, in the Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, Kota Shrinivas Poojary of the BJP and K Jayaprakash Hegde of the Congress are the prominent contenders.

prajwalrevanna.jpg

Bengaluru, Apr 29: HD Revanna, the father of Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna, has accused rivals of creating a conspiracy out of "old videos", a comment that is likely to raise a bigger row over his son's alleged link to the obscene videos.

A woman yesterday filed a police case against Prajwal Revanna and his father over alleged sexual assault. Prajwal Revanna, the Janata Dal (Secular) MP and grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, has denied the latest allegations and also filed a police complaint over circulation of obscene videos, which he said were morphed.

Prajwal Revanna left for Germany on Saturday morning after voting in the Lok Sabha elections a day earlier.

"I know what kind of conspiracy is going on. I am not someone who'll get scared and run away. They have released something that was 4-5 years old. Expelling him from the party is left to the party high command," HD Revanna said.

When it was pointed out that an FIR has been registered against him too, he said, "There is politics, I don't want to comment. They (Congress) are in government and they will do whatever they want."

"All these things are not just today, the Deve Gowda family in the last 40 years (has been targeted by) Congress. CoD (now CID), Lokayukta probe, we have been facing for the last 40 years... I don't want to react to anything...let them take action in accordance with law," he said, adding that he hasn't spoken to Deve Gowda on the issue.

"Since the special investigation team is looking into the case, I will not react any further," HD Revanna said.

Yesterday, a first information report was filed against the father-son duo on charges of sexual harassment, intimidation and outraging the dignity of a woman.

The survivor alleged both sexually assaulted her, and when Revanna's wife was not home, he touched her inappropriately and used to sexually assault her. The complainant alleged Prajwal Revanna also misbehaved with her daughter over a video call. "My daughter blocked his number after repeated calls," the complainant said.

The latest FIR comes when Prajwal Revanna is already in the middle of a controversy after some objectionable videos went viral on social media allegedly involving him.

Prajwal Revanna is seeking a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from as a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate from Hassan.

Bengaluru: Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has issued a series of animated shorts in Kannada advising people of appropriate measures to take during extreme temperatures to keep oneself safe.

“Karnataka has not seen such extreme temperatures and heat waves in the recent past. So, we wanted to ensure a wider reach for safety measures, therefore we decided to issue them in a reader-friendly format,” said an official from KSNDMC.

Meteorological Centre Bengaluru, Indian Meteorological Department, had issued a five-day heat wave warning, lasting till April orange alert, for parts of Karnataka.

“In places like Bagalkote, Vijayapura, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, Tumkur, Mandya, Gadag, Davangere and Chitradurga, the temperature is likely to touch 40 degrees Celsius tomorrow,” said C P Patil, director of the centre.

On April 25, these places recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius.

Orange alert would mean increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people who are exposed to sun for a prolonged period of time as well as those who do heavy manual work.

According to Patil, coastal Karnataka will also have very hot and humid weather conditions, making it very uncomfortable for people there.

“It’s best for children and old people to avoid exposure to heat in coastal areas too,” added Patil.

In places where heat wave is predicted, people are advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 12 noon and 3pm.

“When they go out, it is best to use protective goggles, an umbrella or a hat. Also aerated drinks must be avoided since they cause dehydration. Best to drink water as much as possible, even if you don’t feel thirsty,” said M Rajavel, head of LACD, Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru.

People are also advised not to leave the children or pets inside parked vehicles.

The maximum and minimum temperatures of Bengaluru are very likely to be around 37 degree Celsius and 23 degree Celsius respectively for the next 48 hours, said Patil.

Hassan recorded the highest jump from its normal minimum temperature. It recorded 22.6 degrees Celsius, about 2.8 degrees more than usual.

According to IMD, on April 29 light rain is also very likely in isolated places over Bidar, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya and Chitradurga districts.

On April 30, light rain is predicted again for Bidar, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, Chikkamagaluru, Tumkur, Chikkaballapura, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban and Kodagu districts.

Incidentally, KSNDMC has also issued a series of animated advisory for lightning safety.

“We also update temperature every 15 minutes in our X handle in coordination with IMD,” added the KSNDMC official.
