Udupi, Jul 23: A 22-year-old woman was allegedly stalked and sexually harassed by the vice-president of Yedamogge Gram Panchayat (GP) near Siddapura bridge coming under Shankarnarayana Police Station limits in Kundapur taluk.
She was waiting to catch a bus home, when Balachandra (36), vice-president of Yeddamogge Gram Panchayat, who came in a van, befriended her by saying that he knew her relatives and offered her a lift to her house.
Since it was raining, the woman entered the van. After going some distance, he took the car in another direction and sexually harassed her, and also took her mobile telephone number, the woman alleged.
When she started shouting and crying, he panicked and brought her back on the road and left her, the police said.
The woman then informed her parents, who in turn lodged a complaint at the Shankarnarayana Police Station, which was then transferred to the Kundapur Women’s Police Station. A case has been registered under Sections 354A and 354D of the Indian Penal Code and investigations are on.
Balachandra alias Chandra is absconding. A special team has been formed to nab him, the police said.
