Mangaluru, Jul 30: A mutilated carcass of whale fish was washed ashore at Tannirbavi beach on the outskirts of the city. The discovery of dead whale on Thursday morning attracted a large number of people to the beach.
The local fishermen, who examined the carcasses out of curiosity, opined that the giant fish might have died after being hit by a speeding ship mid-sea.
The whale, said to be weighing around 15 tonnes, was spotted on the shores at Tannirbavi a week after another dead whale was washed ashore at Mogaveerapatna beach. A month ago, an injured dolphin was washed ashore at Hosabettu beach.
The distance between these three beaches is only a few kilometres. However, unlike the previous discovery, today’s carcasses were completely ravaged.
"It could be due to various factors like marine pollution in and around the Mangaluru coast, or due to severe injuries caused by large fishing trawlers," said an environmentalist.
