Mangaluru, Aug 4: A day after Loksabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan suspended 25 Congress MPs for five days for disrupting proceedings in the Lower House of the Parliament, leaders and activists of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee staged a demonstration in front of the district Congress office at Hampankatta in city on Tuesday demanding immediate revocation of the suspension.
Addressing the demonstrators, Congress leader and MLC Ivan D'Souza said that the Congress MPs had been suspended as a cover-up for the blunders committed by BJP cabinet ministers which the former had been trying to highlight in the Parliament. The Congress MPs were merely trying to raise certain issues in the Parliament and not trying to disrupt the proceedings as pointed out by the Speaker.
The suspension of the Congress MPs is a pre-planned strategy by the NDA government which is trying to oppress and subdue the voices of the opposition parties during Lok Sabha proceedings. This is a 'Black Day' for the country, he said, demanding that the suspension of the 25 MPs should be revoked by the Lok Sabha Speaker.
Speaking on the occasion, Congress MLA and state health minister U T Khader said that it was saddening that several MPs had been suspended from attending the Lok Sabha proceedings for attempting to bring the union government's attention to issues of national importance. The NDA government has suspended them for demanding the resignation of top BJP leaders over the Lalit Modi controversy and the Vyapam scam. This action has hurt the sentiments of people across the country, he said, urging the withdrawal of suspension against the Congress MPs.
Another Congress leader Ibrahim Kodichal said that the suspension of MPs signified the death of democracy in the country. He said that Congress members across the state would resort to intense protests if the suspension was not revoked by the Lok Sabha speaker.
Congress leaders P V Mohan, Ashith Pereira, Sadashiva Ullal, Purushottam, Amitha Rao, T K Sudhir and several members of the district committee were present in the demonstration.
