Similar pistol used in Kalburgi, Dabholkar and Pansare killings: Police

September 4, 2015

Bengaluru, Sep 4: Bullets were fired from a similar country-made pistol to kill Kannada scholar Prof M M Kalburgi in Dharwad, rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in Pune and communist leader Govind Pansare in Kolhapur. But other than the weapon used, the Karnataka police haven’t found any other similarity in the three killings so far.

Dabholkar’s murder is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) since May 2014, while a Special Investigation Team of Kolhapur police is investigating Pansare’s murder. Both the cases remain unsolved.

Dabholkar was killed on August 20, 2013, when he was out on a morning walk. Pansare was killed on February 16, 2015, when he was on a morning walk along with his wife. The wife survived the bullet injuries but Pansare succumbed.

A total of 12 teams are on the job to apprehend Kalburgi’s killers. Two of them have gone to Pune and Kolhapur to gather details about the Dabholkar and Pansare cases respectively. They are in touch with the CBI and the SIT. “While we haven’t found any similarity so far, we suspect there could be some links. It will be a day or two before we zero in on the motive for Kalburgi’s murder,” a senior police officer said. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is monitoring the investigation on a daily basis.

Several other police teams are looking into other possible motives for Prof Kalburgi’s murder, especially his relationship with some academic trusts. In particular, police are investigating whether infighting among Veerashaiva Lingayats played a role in Kalburgi’s assassination.

Kalburgi always argued that Veerashaiva and Lingayat are two different sects and that Veerashaivas kept on exploiting Lingayats and even misled them. He maintained that Basavanna founded the Lingayat sect while Veerashaiva is a part of Hinduism. He also maintained that the Lingayat sect was not part of Hinduism. He brought out a series of books and research articles to prove this point of view, angering a section of Veerashaiva Lingayats who believed that Veerashaiva and Lingayat are the same and not different.

This section always targeted Kalburgi for his ideology, said the officer.

Kalburgi was working on a book based on his research about those responsible for the downfall of the Lingayat sect and their motive. Veerashaivas opposed to him thought this book would reveal some uncomfortable truths and challenge their dominance. So, they were dead opposed to the publication of the book, according to the officer.

Such sharp differences and infighting may have ended in his murder. “This is one of the main angles we are exploring right now. But we are yet to achieve any breakthrough,” the officer said.

CBI probe soon: George

The State government will soon write to the Centre seeking a CBI probe into the murder of Kalburgi in Dharwad. Until the CBI takes over, the CID?will continue the investigation, Home Minister K?J?George said.

CID tries to enhance CCTV footage quality

The CCTV?camera installed at Hiremallur Ishwaran Science College, on the way to the house of Kalburgi, has recorded the movement of two suspicious persons on a bike.

The movement has been recorded from a distance of about 40 metres and hence the images are hazy. The technical division of the CID has taken up the task of enhancing the image so as to ascertain the identity of the assailants. The person riding the bike was not wearing a helmet, but the pillion rider was wearing one. It is suspected that the latter might have shot Kalburgi dead, reports DHNS from Hubballi. Forensic experts have suspected destruction of evidence while Kalburgi was shifted from his house to the hospital immediately after he was shot in the forehead.

Congress leader Pawan Khera on Monday, April 29, shared a letter purportedly written by BJP leader Devaraj Gowda to the Karnataka state president of the saffron party expressing concern about the pendrive containing sleazy videos of JD(S) leader and Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna.

The letter was apparently written on December 8, 2023.

The letter, written in Kannada by the Hassan BJP leader states that 2,976 clips were already with Congress leaders and would be ammo for the grand old party during the Lok Sabha elections. The letter also states that if Revanna is allowed to contest under the NDA banner, it is likely to negatively impact the BJP's image in the state.

Sharing this letter, Khera launched an attack on the BJP, asking why the party had chosen to enter into an alliance with JD(S) despite knowing about the pendrive. He also questioned the lack of action, sharing the stage with Prajwal Revanna, and asked who helped him 'escape to Germany'.

Khera also questioned PM Narendra Modi's silence on the matter. Notably, the PM has been vocal about women suffering sexual abuse elsewhere in the country, when a leader of the opposition party has been involved. Modi attacked the TMC government over Sheikh Shahjahan's actions in Sandeshkhali, which allegedly involve sexual harassment and illegal land grabbing.

The Congress leader, however, remained confident that Modi would stay mum on the Hassan sex scandal issue.

"Modi ji will be in Karnataka the entire day today. I can guarantee that he won’t find the courage to utter even a single word on this horrific case in the state wherein his alliance’s politician went around recording thousands of sex videos of several women in his pen drive, and has now absconded abroad!," Khera said on X (formerly Twitter).

While Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has ordered a special probe into the incident, the JD(S) has distanced itself from Prajwal with H D Kumaraswamy saying that while he wanted to wait for facts to come out after the probe, there was no question of forgiving someone who had committed a crime as per the law.

A sexual harassment and stalking case has been filed against former Karnataka Minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal, who is at the centre of the Hassan scandal.

A woman complainant said that she worked in Revanna's house from 2019 for three and a half years. During her time there, Revenna allegedly misbehaved with her, as did Prajwal, according to the woman's claims. She also claimed Prajwal sexually assaulted her repeatedly.

She also claimed the MP had used obscene language with her daughter during video calls, forcing her to block the number and quit her job.

H D Revanna is the elder son of JD(S) supremo and former PM H D Deve Gowda, and Prajwal is the party patriarch's grandson.

Mangaluru, May 4: The Mangaluru International Airport was besieged with a harrowing message of terror recently, when an email, purportedly from malevolent elements, menacingly declared the planting of bombs within the airport premises.

Addressed to the office of the airport authority, the missive, steeped in ominous overtones, bore the ominous signature of a terrorist faction, ominously named 'Terrorizers 111'.

The communication, disseminated in English, ominously detailed the clandestine emplacement of explosives in areas eluding facile detection, accompanied by a chilling warning of their imminent detonation. The threat, ominously looming over not only the infrastructure but also the airborne vessels, portended a catastrophic deluge of bloodshed and loss.

In response to this dire communiqué, airport authorities swiftly engaged the apparatus of law enforcement, dispatching urgent alerts to the vigilant guardians of public safety. Acting upon the dictates of higher echelons, a formal dossier of this menacing correspondence was meticulously compiled, cloaked in the veil of confidentiality to thwart any premature dissemination.

Mangaluru International Airport found itself in grim camaraderie with more than 30 counterparts under the aegis of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and private domains, all recipients of this chilling electronic diatribe. A comprehensive net of precautionary measures was swiftly cast, fortifying the bastions of security in anticipation of any nefarious designs lurking within the shadows.

Hassan MP and Lok Sabha election candidate of the BJP-JD(S) alliance Prajwal Revanna, who is facing an inquiry over the alleged sexual abuse of several women, said the truth will prevail.

The MP, who left the country as soon as the election to his constituency ended, has also sought seven days' time to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka government to inquire into the huge cache of about 3,000 explicit videos and photos allegedly pertaining to him, which have gone viral on social media.

“As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to CID Bangalore through my advocate. Truth will prevail soon,” Prajwal, grandson of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda, said in a post on X.

A case has been registered against MLA and former minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal at Holenarasipura on a complaint lodged by their former cook and relative for allegedly sexually harassing her.

She also alleged that Prajwal made video calls to her daughter and spoke in an objectionable manner, which forced her to block him.

The MP who is seeking re-election from Hassan on a JD(S) ticket, shared a letter by his lawyer Arun G to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the SIT, in which he has sought seven days' time to appear before the official because he is abroad.
