Announcing this at a press conference here on Friday, Dr Niranjan Rai, who was chosen as the convenor of the union said that like-minded organisations and associations from various parts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Sakleshpur had come together to form the union. Associations such as Malenadu Janapara Horara Samiti, Sakleshpur, Nethravati Ulisi Horata Samiti, Uppinangady, Jeevanadi Nethravati Ulisi Horata Samiti, Mangaluru, Sahyadri Sanchaya, Mangaluru, Kannada Katte, Mangaluru, Tulu Rakshana Vedike, Mangaluru, Nethravati Ulisi Horata Samiti, Belthangady, Rashtriya Parisara Samrakshana Okkoota, Mangaluru, Malenadu Youth Association, All College Students’ Assocation, Mangaluru, Arivu Samvaada Kendra, Bantwal, Nethravati Nadi Samrakshana Vedike, Bantwal, Bantwal Taluk Nyayapara Samiti, Swaroop Research Centre, Mangaluru, Malenadu Janahitha Rakshana Vedike, Shiradi, Kannada Rakshana Vedike, Mangaluru, Raitha Sangha, Mangaluru and individuals such as agriculturist leader Vijaya Kumar Hegde from Udupi and Raghunath Rao from Puttur, had offered their full-fledged support in opposing the Yettinahole project, he said, adding that all the above mentioned associations would intensify their struggle in the coming days to urge the government to shelve the disastrous project.

He informed mediapersons that a massive protest and ‘Rasta Roko’ programme would be organised by various associations under the banner Nethravati Nadi Samrakshana Okkoota at Mahaveer Circle at Pumpwell junction on October 15.

Despite a written undertaking by the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) before the National Green Tribunal that they would not continue work on the Yettinahole project till the environment clearances are obtained for the project, work is ongoing in Sakleshpur taluk in Hassan district. This is a violation of the Tribunal by the government, which is cheating the people of the coastal region. The union strongly condemns the arrogant attitude of the KNNL officials who are confident of obtaining the necessary environmental clearances, he said.

He also said that the union and various associations planned to visit each gram panchayat in the affected areas within November 15, to urge them to take a collective decision to oppose the project.

Activist Dinesh Holla from Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya said that the government was bent on implementing the river diversion project amidst opposition even from organisations in Chikkaballapur district. It looks like the government wants to implement the detailed project report prepared by Paramashivaiah committee. The entire project is a money-making project. To stop the government from implementing other harmful projects in the future, we will demand that the entire region from Kudremukh to Pushpagiri as Nethravati Conservation Zone, he said.

He informed that the union and member associations would put up a total of 500 banners opposing the Yettinahole project in private properties on the main stretches in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Sakleshpur to create awareness on the project.

Leaders of members associations have been selected as joint convenors on the newly-formed union. Shashidhar Shetty and several other leaders and representatives were present on the occasion.

Madikeri, May 11: Kodagu police have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for the brutal murder of a minor girl within the confines of Kumbaragadige village in Karnataka's Somwarpet taluk.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime.

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered.

Reportedly, the engagement of the minor girl with the suspect was thwarted by officials from the Women and Child Development department. Subsequently, officials persuaded the girl's parents against proceeding with the marriage.

However, despite these interventions, the suspect forcibly entered her residence during the night, purportedly abducted her, and later perpetrated the heinous crime in a wooded area on the outskirts of the forest, before absconding with her severed head.

Bengaluru: In a fresh development in the alleged Hassan sex abuse case, JD(S) MLA H D Revanna, who was accused of sexually harassing his house help, has been booked for kidnapping a victim allegedly sexually assaulted by his son, Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna. The case was filed late Thursday evening at the KR Nagar police station in Mysuru.

The 20-year-old complainant from KR Nagara accused one Sathish Babanna of taking his mother away forcibly and keeping her in an unknown location at the behest of Revanna.

As per the FIR, Revanna has been named as accused 1 while Babanna was accused 2. The duo were booked under IPC Sections 364A (kidnapping for ransom), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine a person) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

The complainant claimed that his mother, whose name and age were not revealed, had worked as a help in Revanna’s house and farm in Holenarasipura for six years, quit the job three years ago and returned to KR Nagara. She then worked for daily wages.

“Nearly three to four days before the Lok Sabha election, Sathish Babanna, who is known to us and hailed from our native place, took my mother to Holenarasipura after saying that Bhavani Revanna, the wife of MLA Revanna, had asked for her,” the complainant alleged, adding that Babanna dropped her back on the day of the polls.

Babanna allegedly told the victim’s mother and father to remain silent and evade the police if they came looking for them and to inform him of the developments.

On April 29, at around 9 pm, when the complainant was home, the suspect Babanna arrived, told the complainant’s mother that Revanna had asked for her and took her away on his motorcycle. The complainant claimed that he wasn’t aware of where Babanna took his mother and he had told him that if the police found her, a case would be registered and they would all go to jail.

On May 1, two of the complainant’s relatives called him on the phone and told him that there was a video of his mother being sexually assaulted by Prajwal and that it was a huge case, the FIR noted. He was also informed by his two friends of his "mother's videos being circulated".

When he asked Babanna later that night, he was allegedly told that there was a photo of his mother standing with a stick when Prajwal had quarrelled with someone earlier and an FIR had been registered. Babanna told the complainant that his mother would have to be released on bail, the FIR noted.

“Babanna told me not to speak on the matter on my phone and asked me to talk from a different phone,” he said, seeking action from the police.

The case has been transferred to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe the Hassan sex scandal as per the government order.
