Mob kills man for transporting dead cows, later realizes he was a Hindu

October 5, 2015

New Delhi, Oct 5: The Dadri lynching is not a first in communalized Uttar Pradesh. Last year on August 2, a mini-truck was stopped at a police check point in Najafgarh’s Chhawla village. As the driver negotiated his passage with the police, a group of villagers, some of them on bikes, gathered around the truck. In no time they beat up the driver mercilessly, breaking his skull and leaving him dead on the spot. His fault: he was driving a truck load of dead cows and buffaloes.

An hour later, the mob, which thought it had lynched a “Muslim cow smuggler”, came to know that the victim was a Hindu man named Shankar Kumar, belonging to the Valmiki community. He was a South Delhi Municipal Corporation contractor and was carrying dead cows from a cowshed in Surehra village in Southwest Delhi for cremation at Ghazipur in East Delhi.

The police registered a case against 13 persons under various sections of Indian Penal Code, including rioting and attempt to murder, but all of them got bail in July this year for lack of evidence.

Shankar’s death has found a grim reminder in Mohammed Akhlaq’s killing in Bishara village in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, who too was lynched on suspicion of consuming and storing beef in his house. The events that led to Kumar’s and Akhlaq’s killings are indicative of the cloud of hatred building up in smaller towns of India.

The political discourse in Najafgarh can be explained with a small cow replica kept on the office table of the area Councillor, Pradeep Kumar. Cows are even painted on the façades in this rural belt of Delhi. “You see the cow is very dear to the people of Najafgarh,” said Mr. Kumar.

The “animosity” against Muslims took root in Chhawla and neighbouring villages in 2012 after remains of dead cows were sighted by villagers at several spots, the police said. The Hindus in Chhawla blamed the Muslims from nearby Mewat village of killing cows to hurt their religious sentiments.

And so a new trend began. The people of Rawta village formed a vigilante force which began night patrolling at the border between Mewat and Chhawla. Their duty was to protect cows from “Muslim smugglers”. “Security was also stepped up,” said the BJP councillor.

Though the cow sentiment culminated into a lynch mob that killed Shankar, the local politicians continue to justify the presence of vigilantes. Local politicians do feel bad about the killing, but not enough to condemn it. “The people of Chhawla, Rawta and Shikarpur villages (mainly the families of the accused) apologised to Shankar’s widow. After, all it is impossible to contain a frenzied mob and even the family ‘understood’ this,” said Mr. Kumar.

Shyama, Shankar’s wife, resides in a nondescript colony in Nangloi, where an open drain with cows feeding on plastic and garbage dumped in it flows hardly 50 metres from her house. “We got to know about it (Shankar’s killing) a day later,” said Shyama, a mother of seven kids -- six daughters and a son. The police registered a case against 13 persons 'accused' but the witnesses in the court turned hostile.

In a fresh claim, arrested BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda has alleged that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and four other ministers were behind exposing Prajwal Revanna’s sex scam that has brought disgrace to Janata Dal (Secular) H D Deve Gowda family.

Devaraje Gowda has been arrested in a sexual abuse case.

Speaking to reporters while being taken to the district prisons, in Hassan on Friday, Gowda alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore to drag the name of H D Kumaraswamy in the Prajwal’s case.

“D K Shivakumar had offered me Rs 100 crore to project that H D Kumaraswamy was behind the case. The offer was made through ministers N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister. They had even sent Rs 5 crore as advance to Bowring Club. But I did not agree. Hence, they hatched a plot to trap me,” Gowda alleged.

“It is D K Shivakumar, who collected all information from Prajwal Revanna’s former car driver Karthik and readied the pen drive. A team of four ministers were formed to handle the issue. As I did not agree to the plan. They planned to bring disrepute to the BJP, Narendra Modi and H D Kumaraswamy,” he said.

Gowda further alleged that former MLC M A Gopalaswamy of Channarayapatna was sent to him for negotiation.

“The main intention of D K Shivakumar is to bring disrepute to Modi and BJP in the case. Besides, he wanted to defame H D Kumaraswamy’s leadership in the state” he claimed. “They filed a sexual harassment and rape case against me, but found no evidence. Now, they are trying to fix me in the pen drive case” he alleged.

Madikeri: A 15-year-old was bludgeoned to death and the accused fled with her severed head at Mutlu village in Somwarpet of Kodagu district on Thursday late night, hours after her SSLC examination result was declared.

The victim has been identified as US Meena, a 10th grade student of Surlabbi High School. She had passed the SSLC examination and her school attained 100% results.

However, she was brutally murdered by accused Prakash (32), a resident of the village. The police have launched a search operation to find the suspect, said Kodagu SP K Ramarajan

It is said that the minor girl's engagement with the suspect was thwarted by officials from Women and Child Development department on May 9, and later officials had even convinced her parents of not to marry the minor girl.

However, the suspect barged into her house in the night and allegedly kidnapped her. Later, he took her to an area near the periphery of the forest and murdered her after which he fled with her severed head.

Victim's mother too has suffered injuries and is admitted to a hospital for treatment. The reason for the murder will be known after the probing officials have inquired the victim's mother, said the SP.

Devegowda.jpg

Bengaluru, May 18: JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda, who turned 92 on Saturday, broke his silence on the sexual abuse charges leveled against his grandson and MP Prajwal Revanna. He stated that he has no objection to the action taken against him if found guilty. However, he mentioned that the cases against his son, JD(S) MLA HD Revanna, who is facing charges of sexual harassment and kidnapping of a woman, were 'created'. He refrained from further commenting as the matter is sub judice.

Recently, Gowda announced his decision not to celebrate his birthday and requested well-wishers and party workers to wish him from wherever they are.

"... I don't want to comment on things that are going on in the court regarding Revanna. Prajwal Revanna has gone abroad. Regarding that, Kumaraswamy (Gowda's other son and state JD(S) chief) has, on behalf of our family, said it is the duty of the government to take action in accordance with the law of the land," Gowda said.

Addressing reporters, the former PM said, "There are several people connected to these sexual abuse cases. I don't want to mention anyone's names. Kumaraswamy has stated that those involved in this matter should face action, and the affected women should get justice and compensation."

"There is no objection from us to taking action against Prajwal. But people have come to know the facts about the allegations made against Revanna, how the case has been created. In one case, he has been granted bail, and in another case, the judgment is expected day after tomorrow... I don't want to comment on it," he said, concurring with Kumaraswamy's statement that if found guilty, no one should be spared.

Prajwal (33) is facing charges of multiple instances of sexually abusing women. The scandal has sparked a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

Prajwal reportedly left for Germany on April 27 and is still at large. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice has been issued against him in an effort to bring him back.

He was the BJP-JD(S) alliance's joint candidate from the Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls on April 26.

Meanwhile, Gowda's 66-year-old son, Revanna, a former Minister, has been granted interim anticipatory bail from a court here in a sexual harassment case in which his son Prajwal is also an accused.

Asked whether there was a conspiracy to defame and politically scuttle his family, Gowda said, "It is true... considering all that has happened, several people are involved. I won't mention names. Kumaraswamy will address what action needs to be taken."

Responding to a query on BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda's allegations that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is behind the circulation of a pen drive containing explicit videos involving Prajwal Revanna, Gowda said Kumaraswamy will respond to all of this.

"We have seen in the media what Devaraje Gowda has said. Kumaraswamy, as the party's state President, has been actively responding to all this. He will speak. I won't at this point. I had campaigned for the Lok Sabha polls. On June 4, after the Lok Sabha poll results are announced, I will meet with you (media)," he added.

Gowda also appealed to media persons campaigning near his house to end it. "I also appeal to your owners."
