Mangaluru, Oct 6: The police in Mangaluru have once again exhibited their real capacity. As many as five members of a robbery gang landed in police net just an hour after they looted a businessman on the outskirts of the city.
The entire robbed amount of Rs 4,10,700 has also been recovered by the police from the accused, who were caught near Konaje village of Mangaluru taluk in a daring operation.
On Monday evening robbers had waylaid Subhashchandra Naik under the limits of Vittla police station and fled after snatching a bag containing cash from him.
The robbers fired in air using a pistol to intimidate Naik and nullify his resistance. The robbery took place when Mr Naik was returning home in his car with his day’s earning.
However, he managed inform the jurisdictional police within a few minutes and the latter immediately alerted Dakshina Kannada district police, Mangaluru city police and Kasaragod district police.
SD Sharanappa, the Superintendent of Police, DK, told media persons that within an hour after the robbery the police not only hunted down the accused but also recovered robbed cash, a pistol and the vehicle used for the robbery.
The arrested are Ramakrishna (29) of Sasihithlu, Sujith Bhandary (27), Shreyamsha Jain (31), Amalraj (36) of Suarthkal and Manjunath Nageshappa (40) of Hospete. All of them were temporary drivers and were hatching the conspiracy to rob for the last four months.
The SP said that sleuths from Ullal and Konaje police intercepted the white Tata Sumo bearing registration number KA19 AA2448, in which the robbers were fleeing.
