Veteran scholar and President of Alva’s Nudisiri 2015 Dr T V Venkatachala Shastry said writers and society should safeguard each other’s interests and laid stress on the need to maintain peace and perseverance by both.

Delivering the presidential address at Smt Vanajakshi K Shripathi Bhat Stage at Vivekananda Nagar, Puttige, he said the government and social leaderships should strive together to achieve peace and harmony in the society. Dr Shastry lamented that the bond between social life and literature has been loosening these days and this is leading to clashes in the society. The right to expression needs to be exercised in a manner which does disturb the harmony in the society, he said.

He called upon political parties to shun differences, cross barriers and fight for social causes. They should work towards rooting out corruption, prevention of communal clashes, assault, solving border issues and stopping price hike, he stated. Dr Shastry condemned the murder of researcher Prof M M Kalburgi and said that the attack on litterateurs, intellectuals and researches is shameful. He called upon the government and the Central Institute of Indian languages (CIIL) to make serious efforts towards solving of issues, which have obstructed Kannada language from enjoying its classical status.

Dr Shastry suggested recruitment of a project officer/director for one year on ad hoc basis to the institute, providing all necessary facilities. The government and the institute both should make efforts towards taking the benefits of Kannada language to common people, he said.

Intolerance

The growing discussions on intolerance in the country dominated the inaugural of the four-day Alva’s Nudisiri where the inaugurator and the Sarvadhyaksha of the literary-cultural event struck a conciliatory note saying everyone needs to exercise patience.

Inaugurating the 12th edition of the mega event, writer and retired professor Veena Shantheshwara said individual freedom appears to have taken over equality, as feared by B.R. Ambedkar. The individual freedom is being threatened by traditionalism, she said.

Ms. Shantheshwara said actor Kamal Hassan’s statement that intolerance is not new to India and no political party should be targeted in fight against intolerance is worth debating. “I have always been optimistic and hope that programmes like Nudisiri would infuse harmony among the masses,” she said.

She stressed the need for a new national education policy featuring contemporary democratic values and a national agriculture policy to offer scientific prices for agriculture produces.

In his presidential address, Sarvadhyaksha of Nudisiri 2015, T.V. Venkatachala Shastri, said over the years the cordial ties between social life and literary activities are getting loosened while strife is on the rise.

Regretting recent attacks on intellectuals and writers in the recent days, Mr. Shastri said the country has lost a great intellectual like M.M. Kalburgi. He said while society has to protect the interest of writers, writers have to uphold society’s interest: both should exercise absolute patience.

Mr. Shastri said blaming or attacking a redundant old practice and attacking the present generation would severely affect the young minds. Such practices might have remained symbolically at individual/household levels. No one has patience to understand the scientific reasoning behind such practices.

Mr. Shastri said society would take its own corrective course to suit the situation by shedding the old skin. There is no need for agitation or fights for the same.

Finland model

Speaking after inaugurating the literary festival by lighting the lamp and pouring milk to paddy sheaths, writer Dr Veena Shantheshwara said many experiments are being done in the fields of literature and education. But there is an urgent need to form an education pattern which helps to find answer to contemporary issues to face challenges and build strong personalities, she said.

Referring to the education system of Finland, she said the education system is quite developed in that country. There is no tuition fee in the schools though it is a small country. Finland has made significant achievements in the fields of education, sustainable economy and research. The education system there is based on a strong policy and it ensures the overall development of children. Also, the responsibility of providing all resources to the students is given to their teachers. The teachers are paid handsomely for their commitment and they are highly qualified and they retain their credibility. Finland is the first place in terms of education according to a United Nations Human Development Report, she added. In India too, there are ample opportunities to make education student-friendly, she observed.

Stating that corruption and political intrusion in various stages have spoiled the education system, Dr Veena Shantheshwara observed that the burden of books, homework, unhealthy competitions, donation menace etc need to be eradicated. Modern technology should be incorporated while imparting education to students, she said.

Internet has been contributing to the development of language and literature in Kannada. Several websites dedicated to Kannada, including ‘Kanaja’, created by the State government, have been working in this direction. It has been proved that the social networking sites can be used as a tool for the development of the language, she said.

Water policy

Dr Veena Shantheshwara felt that the Union Government needs to formulate a permanent policy on water to address to the problem of water sharing. Also, an agricultural policy is needed to prevent the suicide of farmers, she added.

Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva delivered the keynote address.

Kannada University, Hampi, former vice-chancellor Prof B A Vivek Rai, Mijarguttu Anand Alva, former minister Amarnath Shetty, writers Erya Lakshminarayan Alva, Ham Pa Nagarajaiah, Kamala Hampana and others were present on the occasion.

devaraje gowda.jpg

In a fresh claim, arrested BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda has alleged that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and four other ministers were behind exposing Prajwal Revanna’s sex scam that has brought disgrace to Janata Dal (Secular) H D Deve Gowda family.

Devaraje Gowda has been arrested in a sexual abuse case.

Speaking to reporters while being taken to the district prisons, in Hassan on Friday, Gowda alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore to drag the name of H D Kumaraswamy in the Prajwal’s case.

“D K Shivakumar had offered me Rs 100 crore to project that H D Kumaraswamy was behind the case. The offer was made through ministers N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister. They had even sent Rs 5 crore as advance to Bowring Club. But I did not agree. Hence, they hatched a plot to trap me,” Gowda alleged.

“It is D K Shivakumar, who collected all information from Prajwal Revanna’s former car driver Karthik and readied the pen drive. A team of four ministers were formed to handle the issue. As I did not agree to the plan. They planned to bring disrepute to the BJP, Narendra Modi and H D Kumaraswamy,” he said.

Gowda further alleged that former MLC M A Gopalaswamy of Channarayapatna was sent to him for negotiation.

“The main intention of D K Shivakumar is to bring disrepute to Modi and BJP in the case. Besides, he wanted to defame H D Kumaraswamy’s leadership in the state” he claimed. “They filed a sexual harassment and rape case against me, but found no evidence. Now, they are trying to fix me in the pen drive case” he alleged.

Mangaluru: Disgruntled BJP leader and former MLA K Raghupathi Bhat, who is contesting the legislative council election as an independent candidate from the South West Graduates constituency, said the BJP has adopted the “godfather culture” of the Congress.

Bhat told reporters here on Saturday, that he has not tried to appease any senior BJP leaders to get a party ticket to contest the MLC poll.

“I am contesting and seeking votes based on my achievements. My contesting may have a negative impact on the BJP. However, I want to go back to the BJP after winning this election,” Bhat said, and refused to answer the actual reason for the denial of a BJP ticket to him.

“I have no idea who played from behind that I was denied a ticket for the MLC poll.

Earlier, the BJP had a culture of selecting candidates for MLA and MLC polls by seeking the opinion of party workers at the booth level, followed by discussions at mandal and district levels.

Now the situation is such that even if one person’s name was sent from the state, the final list will be different. The godfather culture of the Congress has stretched into our party too. Only those who appease leaders get a ticket in the BJP. However, I have not appeased any leader. I believe in the support of party workers, and with this confidence I am contesting the election,” Bhat said.

To a query, Bhat said that he has not contacted by BJP leaders after deciding to contest the MLC poll.

“I have already requested all leaders that I should get the party’s Form B to contest the MLC poll from the South West Graduates constituency. I have told them that I am also contesting as an independent candidate on behalf of the BJP. The ultimate aim of my contesting the election is that senior leaders should know the injustice that honest party workers are facing in the BJP,” he said.

Devegowda.jpg

Bengaluru, May 18: JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda, who turned 92 on Saturday, broke his silence on the sexual abuse charges leveled against his grandson and MP Prajwal Revanna. He stated that he has no objection to the action taken against him if found guilty. However, he mentioned that the cases against his son, JD(S) MLA HD Revanna, who is facing charges of sexual harassment and kidnapping of a woman, were 'created'. He refrained from further commenting as the matter is sub judice.

Recently, Gowda announced his decision not to celebrate his birthday and requested well-wishers and party workers to wish him from wherever they are.

"... I don't want to comment on things that are going on in the court regarding Revanna. Prajwal Revanna has gone abroad. Regarding that, Kumaraswamy (Gowda's other son and state JD(S) chief) has, on behalf of our family, said it is the duty of the government to take action in accordance with the law of the land," Gowda said.

Addressing reporters, the former PM said, "There are several people connected to these sexual abuse cases. I don't want to mention anyone's names. Kumaraswamy has stated that those involved in this matter should face action, and the affected women should get justice and compensation."

"There is no objection from us to taking action against Prajwal. But people have come to know the facts about the allegations made against Revanna, how the case has been created. In one case, he has been granted bail, and in another case, the judgment is expected day after tomorrow... I don't want to comment on it," he said, concurring with Kumaraswamy's statement that if found guilty, no one should be spared.

Prajwal (33) is facing charges of multiple instances of sexually abusing women. The scandal has sparked a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

Prajwal reportedly left for Germany on April 27 and is still at large. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice has been issued against him in an effort to bring him back.

He was the BJP-JD(S) alliance's joint candidate from the Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls on April 26.

Meanwhile, Gowda's 66-year-old son, Revanna, a former Minister, has been granted interim anticipatory bail from a court here in a sexual harassment case in which his son Prajwal is also an accused.

Asked whether there was a conspiracy to defame and politically scuttle his family, Gowda said, "It is true... considering all that has happened, several people are involved. I won't mention names. Kumaraswamy will address what action needs to be taken."

Responding to a query on BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda's allegations that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is behind the circulation of a pen drive containing explicit videos involving Prajwal Revanna, Gowda said Kumaraswamy will respond to all of this.

"We have seen in the media what Devaraje Gowda has said. Kumaraswamy, as the party's state President, has been actively responding to all this. He will speak. I won't at this point. I had campaigned for the Lok Sabha polls. On June 4, after the Lok Sabha poll results are announced, I will meet with you (media)," he added.

Gowda also appealed to media persons campaigning near his house to end it. "I also appeal to your owners."
