After Samsung Galaxy Note 7, now Apple iPhone 7 explodes

October 1, 2016

It's like the Apple versus Samsung war will go on forever and the two companies will be at loggerheads in every aspect. Samsung Galaxy Note 7's widely-reported battery explosions have recently been hogging the limelight. Catching up with the fiery' popularity is Apple's flagship smartphone of the year, the iPhone 7. Recently, a Reddit user shared a picture of his new iPhone 7 that caught fire.

Reddit user Kroopthesnoop shared a photo of his burnt up matte black iPhone 7, which according to the user, exploded in transit, unlike Samsung Galaxy Note 7's popular battery issue. The images posted by the user shows the deformed box inside which the iPhone 7 is claimed to have exploded. So basically, when this user received his delivery of the iPhone, he found it in the burnt state. “Something happened between the factory and delivery,” is all the phone's owner had to say in his thread on Reddit.

Details about the incident are still scarce. There is no comment by Apple on the explosion, and to be fair, for now, this looks like an isolated incident. Up until now, there hasn't been any other such incident reported about the iPhone 7. Therefore, this cannot yet be seen as a smartphone defect.

It is a matter of concern how we are surrounded by devices that are so easily prone to catching fire and cause some serious damage to human life. Just yesterday it was reported, a certain top-loading washing machine by Samsung exploded in the US. Consequently, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission had to issue a warning to owners against the particular model of the washing machine. According to CNN, the warning was issued after the department pursued incidents filed by consumers in three US states, including claims by a Texas woman that her washer “exploded with such ferocity that it penetrated the interior wall of her garage.” The woman compared the explosion to the sound of a bomb blast.

Then, the recent Samsung smartphone explosions have been like viral fever. It all started with the Galaxy Note 7 explosions, when the company stopped the smartphone's sales and began a recall in order to replace all 2.5 million of Galaxy Note 7 that it had sold. While everyone hoped that would get the issue under control, a Galaxy Note 7 replacement unit marked safe' reportedly exploded in China. On top of that, an older Galaxy Note 2 was recently reported to have exploded in an IndiGo aircraft, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had to summon Samsung for an immediate meeting to discuss the Galaxy Note's battery issues. DGCA is reportedly banning all Galaxy Note smartphones from being used or charged in flights.

Even in the recent past, there have been a handful of incidents where a smartphone caught fire and caused or came close to causing serious injury to its owner. Just within a span of a few months, there were news about an Apple iPhone 6 exploding in Sydney, causing serious burns to the user, a Xiaomi Mi 5's battery exploding due to overheating, and another phone catching serious fire resulting in the user being engulfed in fire. There were probably many other such incidents that have gone unreported.

Bengaluru, May 2: Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, was issued fresh summons on Thursday by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is investigating the case of obscene videos involving the former JD(S) member, several news outlets reported.

The SIT also junked his appeal which sought seven days time to join the probe, as per these reports.

Prajwal and his father, H D Revanna, have sexual harassment and stalking cases filed against them over the matter. Gowda's son, H D Revanna, however, said that what took place '4-5 years ago' is now being turned into a legal case.

JD(S) in its core committee meeting suspended Prajwal from the party till the end of the probe. Prajwal, meanwhile, took to X to state he would join the probe in seven days time, asserting 'truth will prevail'.

Mangaluru: The passenger vessel service between Lakshadweep and Mangaluru has recommenced operations with the arrival of Parali, a high-speed craft, at the Old Mangaluru Port on Thursday, May 2

With 160 passengers on board, along with a pilot, a ship engineer, an assistant, and eight labourers, the arrival of the vessel brings hopes of reinstating this vital transportation link.

The passengers were welcomed by Congress brass. The vessels that used to arrive before the Covid-19 pandemic took 13 hours to reach Mangaluru from Lakshadweep. However, the introduction of the high-speed craft, Parali, has reduced the travel time to approximately seven hours, said Abubakar Ashraf Bengre.

Bengre is part of a team that has been instrumental in liaising with the authorities of both Lakshadweep and Karnataka to facilitate the revival of this service. He told reporters that the service would bring better economic activity to Mangaluru.

Over recent months, discussions have been held with Hamdullah Sayeed, president, Lakshadweep Congress Committee, as well as Karnataka Speaker UT Khader and district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, to garner support for the reintroduction of the service.

The passengers who arrived mostly sought medical treatment, went shopping or met relatives here. They said that they traveled for Rs 450. Former MLA J R Lobo said that they will urge the government to ensure regular vessel services continue.

The passenger service was discontinued due to a lack of demand, it is learnt. In the year 2018-19, 4,955 passengers embarked and 7,422 disembarked from the Old Mangaluru Port. Subsequently, the figures declined to 3,779 (embarked) and 2,294 (disembarked) in 2019-20. The numbers further plummeted to 561 (embarked) and 19 (disembarked) in 2020-21, leading to the suspension of the service.

At present, the administration of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep has released a schedule for high-speed craft movement from April 29 to May 5.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat High School in Harekala, popularly known as Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba’s school, is gearing up to inaugurate its first batch of Pre-University (PU) courses starting June 1.

The government issued an order to elevate the school established by Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba to the status of a PU College a few months ago.

The School Education and Literacy Department (PU Education) has formally sanctioned the upgrade for the school.

CD Jayanna, the deputy director of PU Education, confirmed that all necessary approvals have been obtained from the government to initiate PU classes.

“Hajabba’s school will kick off PU classes for its inaugural batch on June 1. We have appointed a senior lecturer as the interim principal for the PU college. Presently, the school possesses the essential temporary infrastructure to begin the I PU batch. Plans are underway to enhance the infrastructure for the PU college in the future. Currently, the school boasts adequate classrooms and facilities to commence PU classes,” stated Jayanna.

Harekala Hajabba, an orange vendor, personally erected the school in his native village, New Padpu in Harekala, situated approximately 35 km from Mangaluru. For several years, he has tirelessly petitioned the government for the establishment of a PU college.

Expressing his gratitude, Hajabba mentioned that 19 students who recently completed their SSLC examinations are poised to enroll in the new PU college. He added, “We anticipate enrollment from neighboring villages as well. Both the interim principal and the PU education department have been diligently orchestrating the necessary arrangements to initiate classes.”

He extended his appreciation to the government, local representatives, and officials for their unwavering support.
