Locals kill 100 stray dogs after death of 90-yr-old man in Kerala

October 27, 2016

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 27: A day after a 90-year- old man was mauled to death by a pack of street dogs at Varkala, enraged locals allegedly killed a number of canines in the area today.

Police said they have registered a case in connection with the killing of the dogs.

Though they did not specify the number of dogs killed, Kochi-based Street Dog free campaign head Jose Maveli claimed that around 100 dogs were killed by the locals.

He alleged that the police faced resistance from local people when they tried to arrest those involved in the killing of the dogs.

Meanwhile, the body of Raghavan, who died after being mauled by a pack of stray dogs yesterday, was cremated in Varkala, becoming the second fatal victim of dog attack in the region in recent times after a 65-year old woman was killed by dogs in August at Kanjiramkulam here.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala criticised Union Minister Maneka Gandhi for her reported remark that cases should be registered under Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act against persons who kill street dogs.

"Maneka Gandhi is a hypocrite. She has even insulted Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on the issue. Who gave this power to Maneka Gandhi, who is she?" Chennithala asked in the state assembly.

The assembly would take up a notice for an adjournment motion on the street dog menace tomorrow.

Meanwhile, BJP National Executive member from the state V Muraleedharan flayed Maneka's statement and requested her to show restraint in her response on a matter which was of grave concern to the people at large in Kerala.

"It may also be noted that the opponents will misinterpret such statements to tarnish the image of the central Government and the BJP among the public', Muraleedharan, a former BJP state President, said in a letter to Gandhi.

Stating that she has every right to express her opinion on matters which she considered as important, he said "But going to the extent of requesting the DGP of a state to impose stringent laws like KAAPA on people who are forced to cull stray dogs which have been attacking and killing them will set a wrong precedence".

"I would like to kindly remind you that this issue is not at all connected to your portfolio which is women and child development," he said.

"It may be kindly recalled that the then Minister of Environment and forest Prakash Javadekar had given the consent of the Government to cull Nilgai which was destroying the crops in the state of Bihar, despite you airing your dissent in public', he said.

"The party and the Union Government had to struggle hard to convince the general public that your dissent was your personal opinion and not that of the Government," he added.

He was arrested at Sakleshpur in Hassan district by the NIA team led by Inspector Shanmugam.

According to officials Mustafa was reportedly a member of now banned Popular Front of India and a resident of Shantinagar in Sullia in Dakshina Kannada.

Mangaluru: Former MLC Ivan D’Souza on Monday led a delegation to the Passport Seva Kendra in Mangaluru, urging the authorities to provide basic facilities for applicants. D’Souza addressed the media, highlighting the lack of essential amenities at the Mangaluru PSK. “I have requested the authorities to provide basic facilities for people visiting the PSK.

There are no chairs for the convenience of people who arrive at the PSK. They are forced to sit or stand by the side of the road or on footpaths. Additionally, there is no parking facility, no washrooms, and water has not been provided for the public,” the Congress leader stated.

An average of 500 to 600 people from various parts of the state visit the PSK. They have to wait in the scorching heat of the sun, D’Souza mentioned, urging the govt to address these issues promptly. “Officials have agreed to find solutions to the problems faced by the people. Meanwhile, we have also demanded that the PSK be relocated to a more convenient space. We have suggested that the PSK could be moved to the old DC’s office, where there is sufficient space. If our demands are not met, we will hold a protest,” D’Souza explained.

Ashraf Kinara, vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada Waqf Advisory Committee, echoed the sentiment, stating that the authorities should either provide all basic facilities for passport applicants at the PSK or relocate the centre to a better location.

Several women, believed to be victims of Prajwal Revanna, have left their homes in Karnataka's Hassan district over the last ten days, according to media reports.

These departures reportedly come amid fear and stigma after their identities became public due to the circulating video clips showing the women who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Prajwal Revanna.

"The entire district is in H D Revanna’s control. You speak ill about them and chances are high that it will reach them, because the family and the party have a large following," a shopkeeper in Hagare - 20 km from Hassan – was quoted as saying by the news paper.

Hassan is the bastion of the JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda, and Prajwal, his grandson, is the sitting MP.

The family of the woman whose complaint was the basis of the first FIR against Prajwal has now left their home, the publication reported, citing a neighbour who said, "The woman worked at Revanna’s house as a house help. Some of her videos started to circulate and then, her house was seen locked. We don’t know when she left."

Notably, a former Zilla Panchayat member has also filed a rape case against Prajwal, and in that village many women who worked for the party formerly are now incommunicado, a JD(S) leader told the publication. "We noticed many of the party women deleting their photos with Prajwal on social media. In some instances, men are questioning their wives about their association with the MP. It is shattering the lives of many women in the district," he said.

The local leader added that the former Zilla Panchayat member was there on April 24, but no one had seen the family since the videos came out.

The case is currently being probed by an SIT team and when they reached the Revanna residence, party workers were reportedly heard talking about the women. "I know this woman, she lived close to our residence and was very active in JD(S) activities. Her house is locked… she has small children," one said, as per IE.

Another shopkeeper added, "It was really wrong to reveal the faces of the women. I know some of them, and they have gone into hiding. We don’t know whether they can return."

He noted that it is impossible to survive in Hassan while fighting a case against the Revanna family.

While Prajwal's father, H D Revanna is in SIT custody, a Blue Corner notice has been issued against the sitting MP.
