Man who disclosed Rs 14,000cr black money goes missing

December 3, 2016

Ahmedabad, Dec 3: A businessman from Gujarat has disappeared after disclosing unaccounted earnings of Rs 13,860 crore under the Centre's Income Declaration Scheme (IDS).

Black
Mahesh Shah, 67 , lived in a 4-BHK apartment in an old building in Ahmedabad, and was known to take an autorickshaw to work. The billionaire also owed money to neighbours.

Shah's cash disclosures account for more than 20% of the total Rs 65,000 crore declared under IDS in India. However, in his income tax returns for the past 2-3 years, Shah had shown his annual income as Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.

Income tax department sleuths carried out searches at Shah's residence and his chartered account Tehmul Sethna's office and residence from November 29 to December 1. "The last time I talked to Shah was on November 29 in the presence of I-T officials. Ever since, he is inaccessible," Sethna, a partner in the 90-year-old CA firm Appaji Amin & Co, said on Friday.

Shah, a big-ticket land dealer with business interests in Gujarat, Mumbai and Pune, had declared his income on September 30 -the last date for disclosures under IDS. The first instalment of Rs 1,560 crore, 25% of the 45% tax imposed on his declared income, was to be paid on November 30. However, Shah's declaration form was cancelled by the I-T department on November 28.

Sethna claimed that Shah's declaration was cancelled after I-T officials, following a search, felt he would not be able to pay the amount. "I-T department suspects the possibility of money laundering through income disclosed by Shah," he said. The I-T department, however, said there was no co-relation between Shah's IDS declaration and the search operations.

"It was sheer coincidence that premises of Shah and his business associates were among 67 places searched following market intelligence about illegal currency exchange in Ahmedabad after demonetisation. We had no inkling of Shah's disclosure under IDS, which is being handled by the assessment branch and is confidential. We have seized Rs 40 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 30 lakh from Shah's business associates," said a senior I-T officer.

Shah and Sethna came into contact in 2013 when the former approached the CA for tax advice in a land deal. "The land deal never materialised but Shah kept in touch. Shah was not a regular client and I have never filed Shah's income-tax returns," Sethna said. He conceded that he never doubted Shah's credentials though the latter possessed huge amounts of cash. He said Shah had contacts with highly influential people, including politicians, and put up only at five-star hotels in Mumbai.

Shah's son Monitesh, 32, said, "He (Shah) is in Mumbai but I have no idea about his whereabouts."

HSRP.jpg

With the Karnataka transport department extending the deadline for the installation of High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) twice--- in November last year and February, it is no longer planning to extend the same. The department ordered for the installation of HSRP before May 31.

The transport department through a notification in August last year, had mandated the installation on all the vehicles that were registered in the state prior to April 1, 2019. According to transport officials, there are nearly two crore vehicles that are supposed to get HSRP for their vehicles.

“As of now, the state has registered only 34 lakh HSRP installations, despite extending the deadline twice. From nearly 18 lakh installations since February, the numbers have almost doubled. However, there are still a large number of vehicles that have to opt for HSRP,” said C Mallikarjuna, Additional Commissioner for Transport (Enforcement).

“We will wait till May 31 to check for the total number of vehicles that fall in line. We are expecting HSRP installations to touch 75 lakh, after which we will consider an extension as the numbers indicate that people are falling in line and if some more time is given everyone will get it done. However, if we do not reach that number before the deadline, we will request the government not to extend the deadline but urge for an enforcement,” he said.

He also stated that a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed for the first time and if vehicle owners do not fall in line, it will be Rs 1,000 later until they have installed HSRP. “We will wait till the Model Code of Conduct ends and take the government’s opinion. We are going to request the government for strict enforcement if the HSRP installations are not satisfactory,” he added.

Bagalkot, Apr 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday accused the Congress of planning religion-based reservation in the country for the sake of vote bank politics but asserted that he will not let it happen.

He said this Congress proposal is to appease minorities as the SC/ST and OBC community is now with the BJP.

"In Karnataka, Congress has started a campaign to change the Constitution and to snatch away the rights of SC/ST and OBCs. Our Constitution does not accept religion-based reservation. But the Karnataka government has given part of OBC reservation to Muslims," Modi said.

Addressing a mega election rally in this district headquarters town, he said, "They (Congress) will not settle with this. They had earlier too in their manifesto said about coming out with a law to provide religion-based reservation. There is a similar signal in their manifesto this time."

"I want to make my Dalit, SC/ST and OBC brothers and sisters aware about Congress' intentions. These people on the basis of religion, to keep their vote bank safe, are planning to loot your right which was given by Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Constitution," he added.

Veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa, BJP candidates and MPs from Bagalkot (Bagalkot) and Vijayapura (Bijapur) - P C Gaddigoudar and Ramesh Jigajinagi, respectively - were among those present at the rally.

Noting that most of SC, ST and OBC MPs in the Parliament are from BJP, Modi said, "So they feel that as SC, ST and OBC are with BJP. To gain the trust of minorities, they want to loot from SC, ST and OBC and give it to minorities. Will you let this happen?"

"I want to guarantee today to my Dalit, Adivasi and OBC brothers and sisters. I will not let such intentions of Congress be successful. To protect your rights, your reservation, Modi will go to any extent. I'm assuring you this," he added.

Mangaluru, May 4: A tragic incident unfurled last evening in Subrahmanya of Kadaba taluk in Dakshina Kananda, where a young gentleman, who had recently entered the bonds of matrimony a mere ten days hence, met his untimely demise due to a lightning strike.

As twilight descended, a tempestuous thunderstorm, accompanied by billowing rain clouds, cast its shadow over the locale.

Somasundar was diligently engaged in the task of piling up dried nuts in the yard to shield them from the impending deluge, when fate cruelly intervened, subjecting him to the fatal force of a lightning bolt.

Despite the expeditious efforts to convey him to Kadaba Community Hospital subsequent to his sudden indisposition, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Somasundar, who operated a car washing enterprise in proximity to Subrahmanya, is mourned by his mother, sister, and wife.
