Kasargod, Dec 5: A major fire that broke out in a leading private sawmill at the Chettumkuzhi locality, near here, destroyed wooden items worth around Rs.20 lakh as fire and a rescue services personnel fought for nearly seven hours to contain the flames.
The fire at Ajmeer wood mill, run by Salim on the Vidyanagar-Seethangoli route at Chettumkuzhi, was noticed around 2 a.m. on Sunday.
Three units of the fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot within seven minutes. They were alerted by migrant labourers residing close to the mill around.
Costly wood
As the fire turned into a virtual inferno, the officials requisitioned services of one unit each from Uppala and Kanhangad as the team of 30 personnel fought up to 9 a.m. to contain the fire, sources said.
The fire, suspected to have been sparked by an electric short circuit, consumed almost the entire stock of costly wood, including that meant for manufacturing furniture and household materials, kept in the tin-roofed shed.
The fire also destroyed costly machines used for making wooden materials, they said. Senior police officials from here have reached the spot to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the fire.
