Safdar Nagori, an alleged Indian Mujahideen member and accused in terror case, and Ayaz Sayyad, also accused in the serial blasts, have shared the top honours. Both were ranked number one, scoring 76 marks out of 80 marks on Gandhi's 'Abridged Autobiography'.

The results of the first ever three-level exams on Mahatma Gandhi administered to jail inmates were declared on Thursday.

Navjeevan Trust, a publishing house founded by Gandhi, gave three tests on Gandhi for prisoners having various education qualifications. Those who have studied up to class 7 took a primary test on 'Gandhi Bapu'. Those with matriculation degree took a test on 'Mari Jivan Katha' while those who have completed HSC and higher education were eligible for exam on Gandhi's Autobiography.

Interestingly, all top three honours in the 'Abridged Autobiography' were swept by six serial blast accused who are inmates of high-security '200 kholi' of the jail.

Nagori and Sajid Mansuri, who got the second rank, are also two of 24 accused persons who allegedly dug up 213-foot tunnel in the prison in an escape bid in 2013.

Nagori donated his share of the Rs 25,000 cash prize for being the topper to the Prisoners' Welfare Fund. The second category - a test on Mari Jeevankatha - too has been topped by a serial blasts accused, Shamshuddin Shaikh, and secured the prize of Rs 25,000.

Interestingly, the con man who swindled crores of rupees of Chhara community, Ashok Jadeja alias Jai Maadi, has figured on the toppers' list in the third test, on 'Gandhi Bapu'. Jadeja stood third and won a prize of Rs 5,000.

There were 363 prisoners who took these tests. Navjeevan's managing trustee Vivek Desai said the experience was enriching.

"It was so nice that the jail staff also requested to take these tests in next round. If we get permission, we will have separate category for policemen and separate prizes too. Our intention is to spread Gandhi's ideology," he said.
