Azharuddin's nomination for HCA president post rejected

January 14, 2017

Hyderabad, Jan 14: 'He had not given satisfactory explanation whether the BCCI ban on him in the wake of the match-fixing scandal was not lifted'.

The nomination of former India cricket captain Mohd Azharuddin for the post of presidentship in the Hyderabad Cricket Association elections (scheduled to be held on January 17) was rejected by the Returning Officer K. Rajeev Reddy.

Mr. Rajeev Reddy said that he had to reject Azhar's nomination as the latter had not given “a satisfactory explanation whether the BCCI ban on him in the wake of the match-fixing scandal was not lifted and that he failed to provide adequate proof that he was enrolled as a voter”.

It may be recalled here that Azhar filed his nomination on behalf of the National Cricket Club.

Sources close to Azhar have now hinted he would take up the issue with the Justice Lodha panel as he feels denied the opportunity as per the panel recommendations.

“The panel recommendations have clearly suggested that former international cricketers are eligible to contest and that Azhar even submitted the 2012 High Court judgement copy regarding the setting aside of the BCCI ban. But, the decision of the Returning Officer seems to be motivated and not fair,” says one official who was closely involved in Azhar filing the nomination but refused to disclose his name at this juncture.

For his part, the Returning Officer makes it clear that once the list of candidates is displayed there is no way going back by him and it is for the aggrieved parties to take up whatever follow-up action they deem fit.

This effectively means that there will now two candidates – Vidyuth Jaisimha and Dr. G. Vivekanand - in the fray for the President's post.

Interestingly, for the Secretary's post, only T. Seshnarayan, former Executive Committee member and secretary of Bharat Cricket Club, figures in the list of candidates in the fray which means he would be elected unanimously.

But, there are many senior HCA office-bearers who strongly feel “that this whole process would be declared as null and void as it is in violation of the Supreme Court judgement with regard to the conduct of the elections”.

The names of other candidates in the fray for different posts are as follows:

Vice-president – Dr. K. Anil Kumar, Imran Mehmood.

Secretary – T. Seshnarayan (only candidate).

Joint-secretary: E. Venkatram Reddy and Ajmal Asad.

Treasurer – Mahender, P. Anuradha and P. Srinivas.

For one Executive Committee member's post – Messrs Dharmchand Agarwal, Mohd Imaduddin Farooqui, G. Ramakrishna, Satish Chandra Srivastav, Vanka Mahender and K. Hanumanth.

Hassan MP and Lok Sabha election candidate of the BJP-JD(S) alliance Prajwal Revanna, who is facing an inquiry over the alleged sexual abuse of several women, said the truth will prevail.

The MP, who left the country as soon as the election to his constituency ended, has also sought seven days' time to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka government to inquire into the huge cache of about 3,000 explicit videos and photos allegedly pertaining to him, which have gone viral on social media.

“As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to CID Bangalore through my advocate. Truth will prevail soon,” Prajwal, grandson of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda, said in a post on X.

A case has been registered against MLA and former minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal at Holenarasipura on a complaint lodged by their former cook and relative for allegedly sexually harassing her.

She also alleged that Prajwal made video calls to her daughter and spoke in an objectionable manner, which forced her to block him.

The MP who is seeking re-election from Hassan on a JD(S) ticket, shared a letter by his lawyer Arun G to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the SIT, in which he has sought seven days' time to appear before the official because he is abroad.

Mangaluru: The Bengaluru-Mangaluru air route has recently surpassed the Mumbai route to become the busiest for Mangaluru International Airport.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s city pairing data for March this year, 51,734 passengers travelled between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, while 50,340 passengers flew on the Mangaluru-Mumbai route.

In January and February, the Mumbai air route had the highest passenger flow with 60,306 and 52,732 passengers, respectively, compared to 53,509 and 47,530 for Bengaluru during the same months. However, the trend shifted in March, with the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route surpassing Mumbai.

An official from MIA explained, “The first reason for Bengaluru taking over Mumbai is that flights that almost fly full to Mumbai were reduced from March, after the ministry of civil aviation suggested easing air traffic congestion at Mumbai airport. The air carrier IndiGo, which used to operate four flights a day from MIA, reduced it to three. Air India Express, which operates two flights a day, has made no changes. As a result of this, Bengaluru has taken over Mumbai. A total seven flights operates per day to Bengaluru.”

The official added that despite the reduction in flights, the Mumbai route still experiences high demand. DGCA data for 2023 shows that the Mumbai and Bengaluru sectors have experienced growth of 11.9% and 19.3%, respectively.

The Mangaluru-Mumbai sector has seen a total of 5,52,767 passengers, followed by Bengaluru with 5,52,500 passengers in the same calendar year.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday attacked the BJP over the obscene video case in Hassan district by questioning who gave the accused Prajwal Revanna a visa to go abroad. He also hit out at Union Minister Amit Shah asking why did he gave a ticket to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal, who is the accused in the sex scandal case.

He alleged that former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda planned the escape of his grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna abroad.

“Who gives passport and visa for travelling abroad? It’s the Centre. Can he go without the Centre’s knowledge? It was former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda who planned and sent him abroad,” the Chief Minister said.

"Prajwal pen drives case is not related to DCM DK Shivakumar. Why did Amit Shah give a ticket to the accused of a sex scandal?" he questioned.

Siddaramaiah also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to direct the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs to cancel the Diplomatic Passport issued to Prajwal Revanna and ensure his return to face the law.

Prajwal is accused in an alleged sex scandal which is under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Karnataka government. He is believed to have escaped to Germany shortly after polling in the first phase of elections in the state got over on April 26, in which Prajwal was the JD(S)-BJP combine's candidate from Hassan.

The Karnataka CM said that SIT will conduct an investigation in a transparent manner in the case.

Earlier, Siddaramaiah wrote on X, "The government has decided to form a special investigation team in connection with Prajwal Revanna's obscene video case. Obscene video clips are circulating in Hassan district, where it appears that women have been sexually assaulted."
