Dubai: World’s first rotating skyscraper to be completed by 2020

Dubai, Feb 15: The dynamic city of Dubai, which is already home to the tallest skyscraper in the world, is now gearing up for world’s first rotating skyscraper. The 80-floor ‘Dynamic Tower’ will be a new addition to Dubai’s skyline in 2020.

This one-of-a-kind tower was proposed in 2008 by architect David Fisher. The design will be carried forward by the Dynamic Group.

Aiming to be 420-metre tall, the tower will be Dubai’s second tallest building and second tallest residential tower in the world, with each floor designed to rotate independently – at a maximum of six metres per minute or a full-rotation in 90 minutes, the Deccan Herald reported.

About 90% of the construction of the building has been outsourced to a factory, while the remaining will be done on site.

According to Mashable, each apartment costs a whopping US$30 million, the building is designed to generate its own energy through wind turbines placed between each floor. The surplus energy from the turbines and solar panels is planned to produce enough electricity to power five other similarly sized buildings.

It’s always sunny in… your apartment

Each individual apartment included in the tower will be capable of rotating 360 degrees so that the building’s shape is constantly shifting. This way, residents can theoretically enjoy some pretty intense sunrises and sunsets from the comfort of their own futuristic home. They could even program their home to move with the sun!

Residents of these $30 million homes will have the ability to control their own units and its positioning through voice activated commands. Using vocal queues, they’ll be able to adjust the speed of their unit and tell it to start or stop rotating.

A positive environmental approach

With Dubai as an innovator and global leading force in sustainability and innovation, these residencies will also be electricity-free.

The “Dynamic Tower” is anticipated to house a two-foot gap between each floor, allowing for wind turbines to power the building and even provide additional power for neighbors nearby. By 2020, the United Arab Emirates wants 7% of its electricity to come from renewable resources.

Dubai recently unveiled its Future Cities Show 2017 exhibition, which focuses on providing sustainability, innovation and happiness to regions around the world. “Our objective is to establish tomorrow’s leading cities that can surpass reality,” said Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Dubai’s Minister of Infrastructure Development.

All of this innovation is really putting Dubai on the map. If you needed another reason to visit some white sand beaches, hop on a set of water skis and immerse yourself in an innovation hub, blame it on Dubai’s innovative allure.

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has taken a step towards enhancing aircraft safety and has planned to install a Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday. The project involves various works related to the PAL system and aims to be completed in 20 months.

The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the ministry of civil aviation and the civil aviation safety and security regulator. The PAL CAT 1 system will provide pilots with improved visibility of runway 24 and guidance during their final landing approach. The system will be installed 900m from the threshold of runway 24, as this end of the runway accounts for 90% of aircraft landings at the airport.

The PAL will be mounted on approximately 18 lattice structures, which is a unique feature of the project. The lights will be fixed to frangible T-shaped structures. The project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, which has already been completed and is awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.

Mangaluru: This year too, the Mangaluru International Airport has missed being designated as an embarkation point for the annual hajj pilgrimage. 

According to the Haj Committee of India, not many are choosing Mangaluru as an embarkation point. Last year, although Mangaluru was notified as one of the embarkation points, the Union government removed it from the list at the last minute.

Several associations and organisations submitted memorandums to the Haj Committee of India, requesting the reinstatement of Mangaluru as one of the embarkation points, but their efforts have not materialised this year either.

The use of Mangaluru Airport as an embarkation point for the haj began in 2010. In 2019, 1,400 haj pilgrims flew from MIA to Saudi Arabia.

“When the number is less, it is difficult to consider it. It was the same issue as last year,” reacted AP Abdullakutty, chairman of the Haj Committee of India.
Mangaluru as an embarkation point served people from undivided Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru districts.
Last year, the Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts submitted a memorandum to Abdullakutty. They expressed their disappointment with Abdullakutty and stated that Mangaluru had a good number of applicants ever since it was identified as an embarkation point. 
Now, they have to travel to Bengaluru. 

UT Khader, speaker of the Karnataka legislative assembly, pointed out that several Union ministries are involved in the process of designating embarkation points for the haj.

“We are not sure why MIA as an embarkation point was removed. Is it because of fewer applications, or are airlines not willing to bid for MIA as an embarkation point? Is it only an issue with MIA as an embarkation point, or are there other airports in the country facing similar issues? We will try to find out and seek answers. Meanwhile, we will also start working at the earliest so that MIA is considered as an embarkation point for hajj next year,” said Khader.

Mangaluru: The Bengaluru-Mangaluru air route has recently surpassed the Mumbai route to become the busiest for Mangaluru International Airport.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s city pairing data for March this year, 51,734 passengers travelled between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, while 50,340 passengers flew on the Mangaluru-Mumbai route.

In January and February, the Mumbai air route had the highest passenger flow with 60,306 and 52,732 passengers, respectively, compared to 53,509 and 47,530 for Bengaluru during the same months. However, the trend shifted in March, with the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route surpassing Mumbai.

An official from MIA explained, “The first reason for Bengaluru taking over Mumbai is that flights that almost fly full to Mumbai were reduced from March, after the ministry of civil aviation suggested easing air traffic congestion at Mumbai airport. The air carrier IndiGo, which used to operate four flights a day from MIA, reduced it to three. Air India Express, which operates two flights a day, has made no changes. As a result of this, Bengaluru has taken over Mumbai. A total seven flights operates per day to Bengaluru.” 

The official added that despite the reduction in flights, the Mumbai route still experiences high demand. DGCA data for 2023 shows that the Mumbai and Bengaluru sectors have experienced growth of 11.9% and 19.3%, respectively.

The Mangaluru-Mumbai sector has seen a total of 5,52,767 passengers, followed by Bengaluru with 5,52,500 passengers in the same calendar year.
