Kundapur, Apr 27: A group of miscreants belonging to Bajrang Dal barged into a Koraga house ahead of an engagement ceremony and brutally attacked three family members at Angodi near Trasi in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district.
The incident took place at the house of Shakuntala, sister of a local gram panchayat member on April 24 when the family members were having dinner. Many relatives were present at the house as an engagement ceremony was scheduled for the next day.
According to sources, nearly a dozen Bajrang Dal activists barged into the house and attacked the family members accusing them of consuming beef. Harish (26), Srikanth (19) and Mahesh (20) suffered injuries in the attack.
The victims have identified three of the assailants as Gururaj Acharya, Sunil Poojary and Chandrakanth Poojary, all are Bajrang Dal activists.
Cops detain victims
After the attack, the Bajrang Dal activists handed over the three injured Korga youths to the jurisdictional Gangolli police station. The police immediately registered a case against the injured youths based on a complaint lodged by the assailants. However, the youths were released on bail on Wednesday.
On Wednesday night, Shakuntala lodged a complaint against the Bajrang Dal activists. According to Shakuntala, the intruders not only attacked the family members, but also used abusive language against her and her community. They also threatened to set all the houses in the Korga colony on fire if they continued to consume beef.
Meanwhile, Dalit groups have condemned the Bajrang Dal attack and demanded the police to take stringent action against them.
