Malur, May 20: A 17-year-old girl, who secured high marks in the Plus Two examination (pre-university) in Kerala amidst harsh living conditions, was found hanging in her house on Wednesday.
Rafseena (17) of Lakshamveedu colony at Nittarambu in Malur is the deceased student.
Rafseena, who was a student at Sivapuram Higher Secondary school, had secured 1180 marks out of 1200 in biology group. She had secured 96 per cent marks in Plus One and full marks in Plus Two.
Rafseena's victory is a result of her fight against poverty and harsh conditions in life. She stayed with her mother in a one-room house at Lakshamveedu colony.
Coming to know about her stellar academic achievement, the Maloor Muslim Committee office-bearers had reached her house on Wednesday morning to offer financial aid.
The incident happened while her mother Rahmath went for coolie work. Rafseena was found hanging on a shawl when Rahmath returned at 4.45 pm. The locals informed the police and a team led by Peravoor circle inspector Kuttikrishnan and Maloor SI TV Ashokan reached the place.
The funeral will be held after conducting inquest and post-mortem.
Leaders of various political parties, teachers and classmates thronged Rafseena's house on hearing the news.
Rafseena's father is Abootty. Her elder sister Manseens is a B.Pharm student at Thiruvananthapuram. Her brother Mahroof works in a shop in Bengaluru.
According to sources, violation of her privacy by a section of media that had published exaggerated reports about her poverty prompted her to commit suicide. A few local newspapers had also published photos of so called philanthropists handing over some cash to her.
