New Delhi, Jun 12: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to declare the National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (NEET) results, staying the Madras High Court's restrain order.

Though the apex court did not fix any date for the declaration of results, the CBSE began the process, hoping to announce the test results “within two weeks.”

About 12 lakh medical aspirants took the test, conducted by the CBSE across the country on May 7.
“We will try to announce the results as early as possible. The process, however, will take some time to complete,” a CBSE official told DH.

The Madras High Court had on May 24 put an interim stay on the declaration of the NEET results hearing a batch of petitions filed by some students who had claimed that a uniform question paper was not given during the test and there was a vast difference between the questions in English and Tamil, though the papers in English and Hindi were same.

The CBSE approached the apex court on June 9, seeking an immediate stay on the Madras High Court order. In its petition before the apex court, the CBSE said the entire schedule of counselling and subsequent admissions for medical courses through NEET had gone “haywire” due the Madras High Court's interim stay on the publication of test results.

"On one ground we are inclined to stay the High Court's order. What indirectly this order is doing is that it is diluting the schedule fixed by the Supreme Court," a vacation bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices P C Pant and Deepak Gupta observed while hearing the CBSE's plea.

The bench took note of the contentions of Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Maninder Singh, appearing for the CBSE, and other petitioners who challenged the May 24 order of the Madras High Court on the ground that it was against the spirit of the order passed by the Supreme Court in which schedule for holding the NEET 2017 was fixed.

"In view of the above, the interim order is stayed and it is directed that the authorities concerned will proceed further with declaration of results for the NEET 2017 examination,” the bench held.

The vacation bench, however, made it clear that the declaration of the results as well as the subsequent counselling and admission through NEET 2017 would be subject to the decision of the apex court in the matter pending before it.

It also “requested” the High Courts not to entertain pleas in the matters relating to the NEET 2017 and listed the matter for further hearing after the summer vacation in the Supreme Court as the ASG brought to the notice of the vacation bench that various High Courts were entertaining pleas in the matters relating to the entrance test held in May this year.

A group of NEET aspirants had also moved the Gujarat High Court, seeking an order for holding of the entrance test afresh with uniform question papers claiming that the NEET 2017 questions in the English and Gujarati languages were different.

New Delhi: In a big blow to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a Delhi court has ordered the framing of charges against the former Wrestling Federation of India chief in the sexual harassment allegations levelled by women wrestlers. The court has said there is sufficient evidence on record to do so, and the trial against him can now begin.

Friday's order by the Rouse Avenue court comes days after the BJP decided not to repeat Mr Singh, who is the party MP from Uttar Pradesh's Kaiserganj, as the candidate from the constituency and decided to field his son Karan Bhushan Singh instead.

The court has ordered the framing of charges under Indian Penal Code sections Ordered to frame charges against Brij Bhushan under sections 354 (outraging a woman's modesty), 354-A (sexual harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation). The Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against under these sections and one additional section - 354D (stalking) - on June 15 last year.

Charges should also be framed against the former assistant secretary of the Federation, Vinod Tomar, under Section 506, the court said.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot said the charges will be framed against Mr Singh for sexually harassing five wrestlers and that he stands discharged in the allegations levelled by the sixth.

The six-time MP has been at the centre of a huge political storm since last year, when sexual harassment charges were levelled against him and protesters had hit the streets led by Olympic medallists Sakshee Malikkh and Bajrang Punia, as well as Commonwealth Games and Asian Games medallist Vinesh Phogat.

sampitroda.jpg

Congress leader Sam Pitroda has stepped down from the post of Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress and his resignation was accepted by the party. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to X and announced that Sam Pitroda had decided to resign from the key post "of his own accord".

Pitroda had been under fire over his controversial remark that Indians in the East resemble the Chinese while those in the South look like Africans.

"We could hold together a country as diverse as India -- where people on East look like Chinese, people on West look like Arab, people on North look like maybe White and people in South look like Africans. It doesn't matter. We are all brothers and sisters," Pitroda said during an interview with The Statesman.

The Congress immediately distanced itself from Pitroda's remarks, terming them "unacceptable".

"The analogies drawn by Mr Sam Pitroda in a podcast to illustrate India's diversity are most unfortunate and unacceptable. The Indian National Congress completely dissociates itself from these analogies," Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.

The BJP also hit out at the Congress over Pitroda's remarks and termed them "racist and divisive".
