Chennai, Oct 12: Actor-turned-politician Khushbu Sundar, one of the Congress's most prominent defenders, quit the party today and joined the BJP just months before the Tamil Nadu polls. In her resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, she wrote that she felt "pushed and suppressed" by people who had no connect with ground reality.

"Few elements seated at higher level within the party, people who have no connectivity with the ground reality or public recognition are dictating terms and people like me who wanted to work for the party sincerely, are being pushed and suppressed," Khushbu Sundar, 50, wrote.

"After a long thorough thought process over a period of time, have decided to end my association with the party," she said. Even before the letter emerged, the Congress had dropped her as spokesperson. The party said her exit would have "zero impact" in Tamil Nadu.

"If the nation has to move forward, then we need somebody like Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take the country in the right direction," Khushbu Sundar told reporters after joining the BJP.

For the BJP, Khushbu Sundar is a big acquisition in the southern state that remains largely out of its grasp.

She had been with the Congress for close to six years since 2014.

Though she was the Congress's visible face in TV debates, Ms Sundar's political career was seen to have stagnated, with the party out of power since 2014.

The BJP is expected to give her a big job for the 2021 assembly election in Tamil Nadu. There are unconfirmed reports of a Rajya Sabha seat. "Khushbu will change the perception of the BJP in Tamil Nadu," said the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit.

Ms Sundar had joined the DMK in 2010 when it was in power. She took the step after playing legendary rationalist leader Periyar's wife Maniammai in a biographical film largely funded by the Tamil Nadu government. At the time, she had said, "I think I made the right decision. I love to serve people. I want to work for the betterment of women."

Four years later in 2014, when she quit the Dravidian party, she said, "Hard work for the DMK had been a one-way path." The same year she joined the Congress after meeting Sonia Gandhi. The actor had then said, "I finally feel I am home. Congress is the only party that could do good for the people of India and unite the country."

Her Congress outing soured rapidly when the party did not field her in last year's national election. The DMK-Congress alliance swept Tamil Nadu. Ms Sundar was not chosen for the Rajya Sabha either.

In her letter to Sonia Gandhi, Ms Sundar said she had joined the Congress when "it was at its lowest" and had been defeated in the 2014 Lok Sabha national elections. "I did not walk into the party for any monetary gains, name or fame," she said.

As actor, Khushbu Sundar enjoyed a sizeable fan following. Her fans famously built a temple for her. But she also faced a huge controversy over her comments on chastity.

With Tamil Nadu due for elections in eight months, the BJP, which lacks any charismatic leader in the state, hopes to improve its presence with Khushbu.

The party has also been getting lukewarm vibes from the state's ruling AIADMK on their alliance, which crashed in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The AIADMK is also wary of speculation that the BJP could tacitly back superstar Rajinikanth, who is expected to finally launch his party ahead of the polls.

Devegowda.jpg

Bengaluru, May 18: JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda, who turned 92 on Saturday, broke his silence on the sexual abuse charges leveled against his grandson and MP Prajwal Revanna. He stated that he has no objection to the action taken against him if found guilty. However, he mentioned that the cases against his son, JD(S) MLA HD Revanna, who is facing charges of sexual harassment and kidnapping of a woman, were 'created'. He refrained from further commenting as the matter is sub judice.

Recently, Gowda announced his decision not to celebrate his birthday and requested well-wishers and party workers to wish him from wherever they are.

"... I don't want to comment on things that are going on in the court regarding Revanna. Prajwal Revanna has gone abroad. Regarding that, Kumaraswamy (Gowda's other son and state JD(S) chief) has, on behalf of our family, said it is the duty of the government to take action in accordance with the law of the land," Gowda said.

Addressing reporters, the former PM said, "There are several people connected to these sexual abuse cases. I don't want to mention anyone's names. Kumaraswamy has stated that those involved in this matter should face action, and the affected women should get justice and compensation."

"There is no objection from us to taking action against Prajwal. But people have come to know the facts about the allegations made against Revanna, how the case has been created. In one case, he has been granted bail, and in another case, the judgment is expected day after tomorrow... I don't want to comment on it," he said, concurring with Kumaraswamy's statement that if found guilty, no one should be spared.

Prajwal (33) is facing charges of multiple instances of sexually abusing women. The scandal has sparked a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

Prajwal reportedly left for Germany on April 27 and is still at large. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice has been issued against him in an effort to bring him back.

He was the BJP-JD(S) alliance's joint candidate from the Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls on April 26.

Meanwhile, Gowda's 66-year-old son, Revanna, a former Minister, has been granted interim anticipatory bail from a court here in a sexual harassment case in which his son Prajwal is also an accused.

Asked whether there was a conspiracy to defame and politically scuttle his family, Gowda said, "It is true... considering all that has happened, several people are involved. I won't mention names. Kumaraswamy will address what action needs to be taken."

Responding to a query on BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda's allegations that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is behind the circulation of a pen drive containing explicit videos involving Prajwal Revanna, Gowda said Kumaraswamy will respond to all of this.

"We have seen in the media what Devaraje Gowda has said. Kumaraswamy, as the party's state President, has been actively responding to all this. He will speak. I won't at this point. I had campaigned for the Lok Sabha polls. On June 4, after the Lok Sabha poll results are announced, I will meet with you (media)," he added.

Gowda also appealed to media persons campaigning near his house to end it. "I also appeal to your owners."

sampitroda.jpg

Congress leader Sam Pitroda has stepped down from the post of Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress and his resignation was accepted by the party. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to X and announced that Sam Pitroda had decided to resign from the key post "of his own accord".

Pitroda had been under fire over his controversial remark that Indians in the East resemble the Chinese while those in the South look like Africans.

"We could hold together a country as diverse as India -- where people on East look like Chinese, people on West look like Arab, people on North look like maybe White and people in South look like Africans. It doesn't matter. We are all brothers and sisters," Pitroda said during an interview with The Statesman.

The Congress immediately distanced itself from Pitroda's remarks, terming them "unacceptable".

"The analogies drawn by Mr Sam Pitroda in a podcast to illustrate India's diversity are most unfortunate and unacceptable. The Indian National Congress completely dissociates itself from these analogies," Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.

The BJP also hit out at the Congress over Pitroda's remarks and termed them "racist and divisive".

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru North police have apprehended a minor in connection with alleged voyeurism incident reported in a private medical college in Mangaluru.

DCP (Law and order) Sidharth Goyal said that the minor was produced before JJ Board as per due procedure. The incident came to light when a mobile phone was found in women's washroom in the college.

The mobile-phone was discovered as it was ringing even when no one was in the toilet by the security guard of the college.

Investigations revealed that the mobile phone had been strategically placed in the restroom. As a result, a case has been registered under north police station.

Further scrutiny into the matter uncovered the identity of the accused, a minor male aged 17, who had gained access to the college premises under the guise of being a patient. Following his apprehension, the accused was presented before the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Board in adherence to legal protocols.

The phone has been seized and a case has been booked under IPC section 354 (C), said the DCP.
