IndiGo to connect Mangaluru directly with Hyderabad and Chennai soon

Mangaluru, Nov 22: Low cost airline IndiGo has decided to launch flight services on the Chennai- Mangaluru and Hyderabad-Mangaluru sectors on December 21 with aircraft from Avions De Transport Regional (ATR).

With a view to venturing into regional connectivity, IndiGo signed an agreement with ATR for 50 aircraft and took the delivery of its first ATR 72-600 in Toulouse, France, on Friday. This aircraft landed in Delhi on Monday.

Of the 50, 21 will be delivered by early 2019, Tom Anderson, senior vice-president, programs and customer service, said. Guillaume Huertas, head of sales-South Asia of ATR, said the ATR 72-600 aircraft, with a capacity of 50 seats, have modern cabin interiors and consume 40% less fuel than jets. “Also, all ATR models are well below ICAO noise certification limits,” he added.

The airline plans to cover many tier II and tier III cities through its services which include, Chennai- Rajmundhry, Hyderabad- Rajamundry, Bengaluru-Tirupati and Hyderabad-Tirupati.

Aditya Ghosh, president of IndiGo, said, “This will bring in competitive pricing in the market and passengers will greatly benefit. For instance, the initial pricing on these routes will be ₹1,499.”

The expansion plan has come in the backdrop of the regional connectivity scheme (RCS) of the Centre. “It is mere coincidence that we have acquired new ATR aircraft and are beginning regional connectivity at a time of RCS. This regional expansion plan of ours was not meant to align with RCS,” Mr. Ghosh added.

IndiGo, which did not participate in the first round of RCS bidding, has bid for the second round. Sources say this means that apart from the above routes, IndiGo will put to use the additional ATR aircraft for the RCS scheme as well when the second round process gets over and operations begin.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.
