Belagavi, Nov 22: The state government is taking measures to close down industrial units that are discharging effluents into the water bodies in Bengaluru, Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology Ramanath Rai said on Wednesday.
Replying to Congress' P R Ramesh in the Legislative Council, he said directions have been issued to withdraw power supply connections to such units as the first step. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has been taking action by serving notices on them, he added.
The minister said KSPCB had in 2007 permitted these industrial units to operate by collecting five times the cost of registration as fine. But later a writ petition was filed in the Karnataka High Court, challenging the KSPCB's move. Hence, the Board has filed an affidavit, saying that permission given to such units will be withdrawn, he added.
