Shivamogga, Jan 15: As part of nationwide ‘Jai Kisan Movement’ launched by the Swaraj Abhiyan of Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav, a programme was held in Kagodu village of Shivamogga district on Sunday. Several eminent social activists and farmers took part in the meeting.

“We have been seeing every political party holding rallies in the name of farmers, but it's sad that no one is actually reaching out to the farmers to understand their distress and plight. The Swaraj Abhiyan has started a mass-contact program, where the volunteers in every state will reach out to farmers to understand their problems and establish a dialogue with them,” stated a release issued by the state unit of Swaraj Abhiyan.

Over the next two months, the volunteers will cover around one lakh villages nationally and around 10,000 villages in Karnataka to tell the farming community and villagers about the fraud and cheating being done on them by successive governments. Swaraj Abhiyan aims to become a strong voice against the injustice done to farmers by anyone and everyone who has come to power, the release stated.

Swaraj Abhiyan has submitted its suggestions to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Land Bill demanding withdrawal of the anti-farmer provisions brought through the second amendment bill of 2015, it said.

The core issues of farmers plight is the fact that farming as a profession is not profitable. Whatever be the inflation, whatever be the general price rise of commodities, seeds, fertilizers, urea, etc, crop prices are never increased in similar proportion. Swaraj Abhiyan has demanded that a Minimum Income Act for Farmers be passed so that they are not compelled to take suicide as a means to free themselves from the burden of loans, the release said.

The demands of Jai Kisan Movement include: i) Withdrawal of the land acquisitions second amendment bill 2015, ii) Demand for Farmers’ Minimum Income Guarantee Act, iii) Comprehensive, assured and adequate compensation against natural calamity.

Farmers who wish to be a part of the Jai Kisan movement during mass-contact program will send pots of soil, "kalasha" from their village. Thousands of "kalasha" from across the country will be sent to the Parliament in New Delhi.

In the second phase of Jai Kisan movement, a "tractor-march" to the parliament by farmers led by Yogendra Yadav has been planned. The march will start on August 1 from Punjab and reach Delhi moving through Haryana and Uttar-Pradesh. The march will culminate on August 10, during the monsoon session of Parliament with "kalasha" from thousands of farmers belonging to villages from all parts of the country presented before the parliament.

Swaraj Abhiyan has released a miss-call number 011-4666-6662 for people willing to be a part of the Jai Kisan Movement.

Yogendra Yadav has said on the launching of Jai Kisan movement, "This is a movement of the farmers, but not just for farmers, nor merely by the farmers. We also aim to involve urban citizens, especially youth. This is a movement for reshaping the country's future."

Udupi: The pontiffs of Sri Paryaya Puttige Mutt, the sacred seat of Jagadguru Shrimad Madhvacharya Moola Samsthanam, have submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister seeking comprehensive development for Udupi district.

Proposal for International Airport

A key request is the establishment of an international airport. Highlighting that around 1,000 acres of land are available and suitable, the pontiffs noted that the existing Mangalore Airport provides limited international connectivity. They suggested the airport be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or as a Greenfield Airport to boost trade, education, healthcare, and spiritual tourism.

Metro and Rapid Transit Connectivity

The proposal also calls for Metro Rail or Rapid Transit between Mangaluru and Udupi. The 55 km coastal stretch experiences heavy daily commuter traffic, causing congestion. The district administration is ready to prepare an initial project report for a Mass Rapid Transit corridor and requested inclusion under national urban mobility programmes to ensure safe, green, and time-efficient regional transport.

Port and Coastal Development

The pontiffs urged the development of an international-standard port with a cruise terminal along Udupi’s coast. They also requested fast-tracking of pending coastal tourism projects and revising Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms to encourage sustainable infrastructure and hospitality investment.

IT, AI and Technological Infrastructure

Support was sought for an IT and AI Innovation Park with incubation facilities under Digital India and Startup India initiatives. The proposal also emphasized the need for strengthened data security and cloud computing infrastructure to boost India’s technological independence.

Sports and Education Initiatives

The pontiffs requested national sports status for Kambala, along with financial and infrastructure support. They also sought the establishment of an AIIMS in Udupi, a new IIT campus, and approval for an IIM to promote higher education in the district.

Representation to the Prime Minister

Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Pontiff and Sri Sushrendra Tirtha Swamiji represented the pontiffs in submitting the comprehensive development proposal to the Prime Minister during his recent visit.

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.

Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.
