Mangaluru, May 12: The district unit of Janata Dal (Secular) in Dakshina Kannada is geared up to face the upcoming gram panchayat elections in the district, with members from the party contesting in 350 seats in different gram panchayats, said JD(S) district president Mohammed Kunhi Vittal.
Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, he said that after the announcement of gram panchayat was made, a meeting was convened where the members of the party decided to contest in as many seats as possible out of the total 1,824 seats in the panchayat elections in Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia taluks. So far, 40-50 members have already submitted their nomination papers for seats in Bantwal taluk, he said.
Alleging that the Siddaramiah-led Congress government had failed to resolve problems in rural areas such as frequent power cuts, water scarcity and re-issuance of ration cards, he said that the JD(S) would oppose the corrupt ways of the Congress and BJP parties, which had brought zero progress and development in rural areas in the past few years. From the past two years after coming to power, the grants given by Congress government to the development of rural areas is nil, he pointed out, adding that corruption was still rampant in the several parts of Dakshina Kannada and the state, especially illegal sand mining.
He said that although the party had become weak in the past few years, it would make all efforts to make a comeback in the district with the help of state party leaders.
Responding to a query, he said that the JD(S) would not enter into alliance with any political party ahead of the gram panchayat elections.
JD(S) district unit working president S P Chengappa, Shrinivas Alva, Vasanth Poojary and others were present.
