The villages have expressed concern following the accumulation of black dust on few houses since Saturday night.

The residents said that the black dust started accumulating on their walls and on clothes put out for drying. The residents accused the coke and sulphur recovery plants of the MRPL of polluting their surroundings.

Following a complaint, personnel from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and officials of MRPL visited the places on Sunday morning and collected samples of the black dust.

During the process, a resident pressed her hand, blackened with dust, on the back of a director of MRPL as a sign of protest.

Meanwhile, in an official press release the MRPL said that a high-powered team was reviewing the entire critical process of refinery operations and to find mechanical or technical errors, if any, in their operations.

The company was concerned about the flyaway dust, if there was any. The company was committed to ensure that neighbouring villagers were not put to any inconvenience, added the release.

The KSPCB officials said that they sent the samples of the dust and were investigating into the source of this discharge. Senior Environment Officer N. Lakshman said that an expert technical committee, headed by NIT-K professor G. Srinikethan, will also study the whole issue.
