Chikmagalur, May 19: A local court has turned down the bail plea of the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) personnel who brutally gunned down cattle trader Kabeer at Tanigodu check-post near Sringeri last month.

The cattle traders were stopped at a forest check-post for a routine check at around 3.30 am on April 19 by a police team comprising members of the ANF which operates in the Western Ghats region. Constable Naik, a 2012 President's gallantry medal winner for a Naxal encounter, fired around nine rounds from his AK-47, including the three that hit Kabeer.
He was arrested on April 25 after Umar Farooq, who was in the truck with Kabeer, filed a complaint.
Kabeer's friends, who escaped from the scene, said that ANF personnel resorted to the extreme step without any provocation. The ANF has claimed its personnel mistook Kabir for a Naxalite and killed him.
Nayak had applied for bail after several Hindutva outfits openly supported him. However, the Additional Sessions Court rejected the bail plea.
